Kennecott C opper : A Key Industry The Bingham Canyon Mine Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation, is acknowledged as the i worlds largest man made ex- -' the result of recavaticn moving more than 2, 570, OCX), 000 tons of material since 1906. From this vast tonnage, over 17 billion pounds of copper has been produced, a record for any single, individual copper mine. This mine is the first open pit mine in the copper industry; the largest single copper mining project ever undertaken and has produced more copper than any single mine in history: From its beginning, when new and radical departures from accepted mining practices were inagu-rat- ed to handle low grade ore profitably, this "incredible" mine has been a world renowned attraction to technicians and tourists alike. Kennecott is currently reaffirming its faith in Utah through a $100 million capital investment expansion program which will enlarge operations and enable the corporation to maintain its position of prominence and leadership within the mining industry. When this expansion program is completed in 1967, It will help offset the problem of a declining ore grade and restore the divisions copper production to about the level of a decade past. Byron Mock, a Salt Lake City attorney and vice chairman of the Commission, will preside. Mining industry attorneys will take a careful look at a mineral exploration bill currently before the U.S. Congress when they conduct a tax forum cm the last day of the Convention.
