Today whether your house is built of straw, wood or bricks, it can be moved scientifically. at But as the wolf learned, the bard way, brick houses still are the hardest to move. Lloyd Gerber, manager, House Movers Inc., related The story of the Brick House Movement. This structure, prepared for moving along city streets by House Movers Inc., is largest building ever moved in state of Utah. Cost of removing wires, parking meters, other impediments, is far more than offset by savings in moving process. The first job of house movers is to break holes in the foundation of a house just below the brick line. Steel rails are placed crosswise through the holes (about 36 inches apart). The movers place two large timbers beneath the rails, tne length of the house. The rails are sprung to take the bend out of them before the house begins to move and the rails and timbers are wedged and The rails then are rigged. tied together with wire, so the THIS VACATION TIME 5080 Southmoor Cr. House Movers Inc. uses a unified hydraulic jack system to lift the house from its foundation. Each jack will lift up to IS tens. Rollers then are placed under the timbers; a track is placed under the house, and the house rolls from its foundation along the track. Wheels are chained to die timbers to bear the weight of the house at three points, and the house is ready to go. That's when the trouble starts, said Mr. Gerber. The pulling itself is fairly simple, he explained. But if the house is high, a host of people are required to accompany the move. Utility lines, power lines, telephone lines may have to come down. A crew from the state highway signal department, a crew to cut trees and an escort service may be needed. You have to be careful, he stated. You might go over or manhole, somebodys somebody's sidewalk. Everybodys mad at you, Mr. Gerber declared. All kinds of permits are required to move a house including a permit from the highway patrol and from the MlDVAlE Buy with low down on contract. Because brick houses are normaUy heavier than frame houses and are usually slower to move, such houses usually are not transported more than Frame houses, oo the other hand, can move all over the country and its not unusual to move a frame house 30 miles. 200 miles. Frame houses are altogeth- er easier to move. The mover just knocks out Hie foundation, rigs it and puts the wheels on. But other arise when problems moving may a bouse. If the foundation is not high enough; the mover may have to tunnel through the ground. Or when a brick building cant be moved directly out, the basement may havetobefUled with blocks to level the basement with the timbers. This was the case of the building moved last week from the site of the Civic Auditorium. The ground beneath the building was level, but it once was a basement. This building is the largest structure ever to be moved in Utah, said House Movers Inc. It required 130 wheels for its move. All lines had to come down, reports Mr. Gerber. Windows are seldom broken in moving except through vansaid Mr. Gerber. dalism, There is sometimes very little cracking of plaster, but the repairs are insignificant, he said. v Wiring and plumbing are left intact; just cut off at the foundation. With such an involved and expensive process, why do people bother to move a house? Its not for sentiment, according to Mr. Gerber. Its financially advantageous. Nearly all of the buildings moved are moved from condemned areas... .maybea state will be passing highway or, as in the case through of downtown Salt Lake, a Salt Palace is planned. The state sometimes buys buildings because it doesnt look good fof a road to go through the middle of a house. Rather than tear the house down, its sometimes of greater benefit for the state to 'almost give the houses away. A customer may buy a house, if it is profitable with moving costs included. Buildings up to 1700 tans have been moved in the United States and movers now are contemplating moving the huge Hall of Records in Los |
