Show SEPTEMBER 22, 1987 L, Business leaders of future at DHS cinch top honors By DONETA GATHERUM KAYSVILLE The Davis High School Chapter of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) recently took first and third place awards in national FBLA competition. The first place honor was for money management. The chapter received third place nationally for the outstanding project. Davis business students and FBLA members received first place awards in state competition in these same areas. Announcement of the national awards was made in July at the national convention held in Anaheim, Calif. Five students attended the convention with these local sponsors contributing money for travel and convention expenses Adventureland Video, C. Udell Green, First Security Bank, First National Bank of Layton, American Savings, Brough Realty, Harrys Thriftway, Bowmans Market, Clover Club, Barlow Insurance, C.H. Dredge and Co., Tom Winegars, Barnes Bank and Cherry Hill Campground. Work on these business management projects was accomplished by about 100 business students and members of FBLA. Many were seniors who have graduated. Arne Murdock chaired the money management committee while Amber Ferrin chaired the outstanding project committee and was the chief executive officer of the company. To get a business project ready for state and national competition, the business students formed a corporation, drew up articles of incorporation and conducted market and product research. It was determined that eight ounce solid chocolate hearts would sell well for Valentines Day. Many committees were organized, including advertising and distribution groups. The students had a financial committee to do the accounting. They sold common and preferred stock. After the sales were completed, there was a distribution of the net profit. This activity taught the students about our free enterprise system and it promoted the goals of FBLA. To qualify for state judging, the students wrote five reports. Each report was about 40 pages long. This is the second time Davis FBLA Chapter has received national honors. They have consistently won state awards for many years. Largely responsible for a first place in national Future Business Leaders of America competition at Davis High School are: back, Louise Lochhead, left, adviser; John Shaw, Davis Vetter and Shelly losefa, adviser; front, Dennis Lott, left, Anne Murdock and Mark Sanders, chapter members.
