We are really all in this together today as we deal with the changing economic situation, he said. We are in the process of restructering society and government in the same way that businesses and households have had to adjust. Change is not easy to cope with but it is a great opportunity to take the dynamics of change and shape society in a new way for those who will follow us. Looking back, we have all had to deal with change. Every generation has its tough challenges. The audience also had the opportunity to ask the governor some questions. Keith Barton of the Bountiful City Council asked the governor about Utahs position on the fiber optics industry and if Utah is doing anything to attract the fiber optics businesses. The governor added that idea to his list for further investigation. School Board President Sheryl Allen said that education took tremendous cuts last year. She asked if any money would be reinstated from the $51 million surplus. I do not see that occurring, Gov. Bangerter said. My recommendation is to not look at the $5 1 million as a source of revenue yet. He commented that there is an unlimited number of agencies asking for the money. We think we have preserved the basic services, he said. We should hold that to see if economic performance continues at a high level before we spend it. Alcoholic and problem drinking is not a main joy in anybodys life, no matter how old they are. The reason your grandmother has no other joys may not be due to her age but due to her drinking. Can I control my drinking by only drinking beer? A can of beer, a glass of wine or an ounce of hard liquor have the same amount of alcohol content. There is no difference. You should look honestly at your question, however. People who are not alcoholics seldom ask themselves questions about how to control their drinking. Experts agree that if you have to control your drinking it is probably already out of control. What is an intervention? It used to be thought that alcoholics had to reach a bottom before they were willing to accept help and that they had to come to terms with their problems themselves. Now people realize that alcoholism and drug dependency are diseases and like any disease they have smptoms which can be pointed out to the victim. When people who care about the patient confront the person with his or her behavior and overcome the denial that is part of the disease this is called an intervention. It can be an informal talk between husband and wife or a formal confrontation with doctor, employer and several family members working together. Most professionals in the field today agree, however, that interventions can be successful in saving peoples lives. Ive heard that cocaine is addictive. Ive stopped several times with no problem. Many users become dependent on the feeling of euphoria produced by the use of cocaine. Their life begins to revolve around the next dose. When dependence is severe the user will experience deep depression after the effects wear off. Aaron and Sunny share common bond By CHERIE HUBER You know whats so special about this cat? Aaron Cannon likes to ask visitors, Hes blind, just like me. Aaron has been blind since birth. He had often told his mother that while he liked her cats, he wished she could find a blind cat for him. His request made its way to the list that Lyn Bradak of Farmington, of Help Save the Animals, keeps of people looking for pets. When a Clearfield woman mentioned that she had a kitten that was bom blind, Aaron and the kitten were matched up. Aaron named the cat Sunny because his mother told him that yellow and white were sun colors. Sunny uses his keen sense of hearing to keep track of what s going on in the Cannon home. At five months, he is still a kitten who likes to play, so he tracks the other cats for a satisfying tussle from time to time. He also enjoys chasing feet and playing with Aaron, who has learned to be calm and careful with animals. Sunny is strictly an indoor, cat, so he has to stay behind when Aaron visits his neighborhood friends. Aaron counts driveways to find the right house when he goes out to play. This year Aaron will be a second grader in the new West Clinton Elementary School, and his brother Eric will be in the third grade. Before school starts, Denise Doebeling, a vision and mobility itinerant from North Salt Lake, will help him get acquainted with the new school. Aaron, who reads braille and types using a braifler, gets very good grades. He is also Aaron Cannon and his cat Sunny were both born blind.
