Crosby, Zinniger Star on Mound; Stearns’ Homer Paces Wyoming Win By JOE WATTS Herald Sports Editor PROVO, UTAH, SUNDAY,APRIL 27, 1969 ERTae Wyoming's Bill Stearns pre- vented the BYU Cougars from sweeping a three game series + pra in Provo this weekend by pacing the Cowpokes to a 43 victory in the final game of the series after the Cougars had downed the Pokes $8 on Friday and 3-0 in the first game Saturday. Stearns hit a grand slam home run some 380 feet into a car window beyond the left field fence to provide ‘all of the Cowboyruns in the final game, and in addition to his grand slam he also came up with the key defensive play of the game which prevented the Cougars from tying the game in the final inning. In thatfinal inning Doug Howard singled and Terry Sanford eracked a triple against the right centerfield fence, and would have scored the tying run except for a sensational savebyBill Stearnsof an errant throwfrom theoutfield, Wyoming pitcher Matt Sterling then pitched out of the inning leaving the tying run stranded at third base. In the first game of the |doubleheader the big story was, Ken Crosby who pitched his second straight shoutout to pace the Cougars to a 34 victory, Crosby blanked Colorado State) WYOMING CATCHER Tom Michel, left, and firs it baseman Rick O’Daniels attempt to in a nine inning game during) snag pop-up in second game against BYU, ‘The ball popped out Michel’s mitt and O’Daniels the last series and kept his couldn't grab it before it fell to ground, scoreless skein of innings alive with another shutout. e Meanwhile in Salt Lake City Saturday the University of Utah also split a double header with Colorado State, The Utes won Friday’s game: |SATURDAY’S 1ST GAME ....|SATURDAY’S 2ND GAME .... the first game 10-2 and lost |BYU AB RH RBI| Wyoming(0) Wyoming (4) the second game 3-0. 5 1 1 1)Player ab rh rbij/ Player Thus BYU and Utah remain Fairbanks ab ¢ hb rhi 4 0 1. 1\Howe tied atop the Northern Division Berge 3... 2% .,|Howe Pr AS. standings with identical 6-3 rec- Romney 4 © 1 06/ODaniels 4 . 2 ../O'Daniels & FT Bak ords and Wyoming and Colodee 3 10 oe i ss +e +] Weber a At,.o % rado State have identical 36 ‘nosp 2 1 1 0)Simonini soe | Stearns lei 6 records in the cellar.
