Show Evidkntly ahe Herald does not think the prayers offered by distinguished distin-guished ministers, even by George Q. Cannon, at the commencement of the session of the convention, for non-par-tiean action and policy in framing the new constitution, are very iiKeiy w uc newered. No one can accuse the Herald of advocating partisan action on the part of the convention, either during tbe late campaign or since. But m matter what any democratic influence influ-ence may or may not do, the convention conven-tion is partisan and the constitution will be bo. "Figs do not grow on thistles.1' We have never looked fcr anything else, but a modicum of good feeling, good sense or iairnesa would have given at leaet one chairmanship to the democrats. Here is Earl G, MaeBer, the most illustrious educator in the state, placed at the tail end of the educational committee, while a man - who knows next to nothing about it is placed at Ub head. Here is non-par-tiBauehip for you with a wamon. Maeser is a democrat. There is no shame among the republicans. I Aeide from the simple question of remonetization, there is no serious I trouble with American finances. Re- 1 monetization would give us plenty of I money and of the sort with whica the I country will be most abundantly satiB- fied, and the country is perfectly fa miliar with it. Had Mr. Cleveland re-monetized re-monetized silver there would have been no such question as the gold balance bal-ance in the treasury or tbe sale of bonds. There could have been no decency de-cency and no cause of dlsturbapce or 1 1 dissatisfaction. What a wonderful reproof re-proof he could have given republican rapacity by this simple act of justice. Tnat alone would have firmly estat-lishea estat-lishea the democratic parly in power and it could not have been unseated in twenty-rite years. Mr. Cleveland has thrown away the one chance of immortality which has come to him. Tiie Pope's recent encycl'cal takes strong grounds against divorce. The morals of the position are all right. There is far too great a license in theBe things in these modern days. Men and women enter the sacred relations of marriage with too little reflection, and they go into the divorce courts upon any sort of provocation, even the most trivial. The christian churches, instead of battling against each other's tenets of faith, would accomplish tar more for morality, purity, and for the purity of the homes of the people, it they would lock shields and battle against the demon Qf immorality in this thing. The prevalence of divorce in our couHb today is marvelous, and indicates a low order of virtue among the people. The churcue3 are losing deal by refusing to fiht in a body against divorce. Hadn't the Denver Republican better bet-ter bend its herculean energies toward tramping out the polygany of Colorado Colo-rado rather than that of Utah? There is more polygamy in one Btreet in Denver Den-ver than there i3 in all Utah at this moment. They have woman's suffrage in Colorado, and they have a good deal of human deprayity as well. It the Ke-publican Ke-publican were to devote itself to the destruction of the beam in its own eye and let the mote in its ne ighbor's eye alone, it would not see any the worse for the change of policy. . The eiuption of Oraziba may grow to be veiy serious. It will be, if it destroys des-troys the Cardoba coffee plantations. It may reach the altitude of an added one cent a pound upon the price of the world's supply of the fragrant berry, wh'ch would be a disaster sure enough. Tbe Cordoba region is the one in which so many southern Boldiers sought refuge after the close of the rebellion, and there are many Americans there yet. When Harry Hayward is hanged the greatest living villain will be disposed of. The decent world should yote Lawyer Nye a royal fee. He deserves well of civilizB tion. A more brutal or dastaraiymurder was never committed than the Ging murder, or for a more pitiful Bum. What a dreadful scoundrel scoun-drel that lellow Hayward is! The editor of the Provo Dispatch is lonesome for another spanking. The above elegant morceau, classic for its grace of diction, appeared in Monday s Tribune, which indicates that although Goodwin is busy making mak-ing the new constitution, the blackguard black-guard of the paper is still on deck and hard at his usual work. j The question of y.. jh -l rWeserVaKttons TeTnrown open?
