The Professional Spring (AP) Football League has a little more than three days to either raise about $1 million or forget about playing its first game for a while, commissioner Rex Lardner says. Lardner on Thursday ordered the new league's 10 teams to suspend operations while officials deal with the money crunch. The league, which was scheduled to start in just 2Vi weeks, planned meetings with potential investors over the next 72 hours, Lardner said. 63-5- Three more A.F. free throws and the final two Lamb bombs cut the lead to Then Tori Allen tied the game with 40 seconds left. Snuka came right back with fast break layup. When the Tigers had 66-6- 4. the lead and the ball with 16 seconds left it seemed over but Lamb tied the ball up and American Fork "We'll be meeting to see if we can work this out," Lardner said in a telephone interview. "We'll Utah Valley Community Lardner said players were informed of the decision to suspend operations around noon on Thursday at their training camps in Florida and Arizona. Each team had about 65 players in camp, he said. "We advised them to return home and thai their general managers would be in touch with them on Monday to let them know where we are," the commissioner said. Lardner said that he was optimistic the league will continue. If so. the league could push the start of its season back two weeks. If the league cannot continue, he said officials hoped to make another go in 1993. Col- lege opens the 1992 baseball season with a pair of games at Dixie College in St. George on Saturday. The Wolverines face off against the defending region champion Rebels in I p.m. doubleheaders. UVCC coach Steve Gardner, in his second year with the Wolver-- , ines, is looking to improve on last season's 3 record. He returns six regulars from that squad, and three pitchers. "We have the experience and talent to be one of the leagues top teams," said Gardner. "We're much improved in the pitching department, and that was a weak spot last season. We have seven or eight kids we could start and feel com27-2- fortable with." Gardner has two of last year's top throwers back in Shane Wilde and Dave Brock. Transfers Dereck Hope (Southern Utah) and David Hoggan (Wilbur Wright) look strong. Redshirt freshman Pat Bird and newcomer Daren Upham have been throwing well. Lefty Damon Jangard could also start some, along with transfers Joe Arnold (Dixie) and Paul Simmons (Utah). Gardner will have a Pleasant Grove trio, Jason Smith, Tod Johnsen and Eric Johnsen, working out of the bullpen. "We're loaded with talent in the infield," said Gardner. First baseman Chris Arambula hit .417 last year and should be one of the Region's top players this season. Also back are third base- man Shane Quesnell, shortstop drilled the trey, then calmly dropped in the free throw. Snarr lead the Tigers widh 25, Snuka added 8 and Martin 17(12 of those in the last four minutes of regulation and overtime) . Krommenhoek led the way for 7 free A.F. with 32 points 1 (16-of-1- throws), Lamb had off the 19 ; bench and Allen had 13. The win drops American Fork into a second place tie wjth Timpview at 3 and all but assures the Tigers a spot in the 4A state tournament as they now have a 4-- 4 record. 5-- Meanwhile, Mountain View put the league title in the bag with win as LeAnn Murranaka turned; a physical game to her advantage for 22 points. Also inside for the Bruins, Regan Scott added 14, Karrie Henry 12 and Mandy Hodges had 10 from outside. Ali Haws powered in 1 1 for the Bulldogs, Tricia Pinegar had 10 and Ali Swindle nine. No information was available on the game. P.G.-Timpvie- w - Ma't Rasmussen and second baseman Trent May. "It helps to have these guys who've been through the wars; through crunch time," said Gardner. "We also have some very tal- ented newcomers in Dan Schoon-ove- r (PI. Grove) and Scott Vest (Sp. Fork). Both can play anywhere in the infield. We have Paul James returning from a mission, and he can play third or second. "As far as starters, it will just depend on who's making contact at the plate and who's making the plays on defense." UVCC has only have one returning outfielder, but the youngsters coming in are especially talented. The veteran is Shane Marshall, who hit .321 last year and played center field. He'll probably move to left. In center, the Wolverines have a pair pf speedsters in Bob Jenco, a transfer from Southern Idaho, and Eric Johnson of Pleasant Grove. In right field, Mike Rummens has a very good arm, and can make the plays defensively. He hit over .400 in the fall for the Wolverines. Greg Smith, out of East High, a hitter, can play center or left-hand- ed right. The catching is solid. Brian Hull 15 HR) is back. "He's good defensively, and the pitchers like to throw to him," said e. Gardner. "We also have Brian who was the starting catcher for me at Snow College before his (.355, Ar-gyl- mission. With those two, we're deep at catcher." Ricks edges UVCC women! Ricks REXBURG, Idaho College scored the final seven points of the game to knock off the break.
