At home March 23, the Vikings defeated Box Elder 4-2. Pleasant Grove then tamed the No. 3-ranked Mustangs 3-1 on the road. Though glad that his players came out on top in their March 23 win, Viking coach Eric Bayles said, "We've got to score more goals than we do. Our shot selection is okay. We're just not hitting our shots." Pleasant Grove led Box Elder 21-13 in shots on goal. With the Vikings converting con-verting only 13 percent of their goal attempts, the Bees gave them a close game all the way through. An - "7." 1 f ' " ' ' V 'i If. r. Softball team drops 3 non-region games By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove soft-ball soft-ball team suffered three losses in non-league action last week. At home March 22, the Vikings got throttled 3-10 by Spanish Fork. At Judge Memorial March 23, the Bulldogs outlasted Pleasant Grove 10-6. March 24 saw the Buffaloes defeat the Vikings 7-1 in Tooele. In the Spanish Fork game, a Don error let the Vikings secure a 2-0 lead during the bottom of the first. After that inning, Don pitcher Mele Vaitani held the Vikings scoreless clear to the sixth inning. That round, Pleasant Grove made only one run when Lauren Roderick came home on a sacrifice fly. By then, the Dons had secured a 7-2 lead, beginning begin-ning with a four-run rally in the fourth. Spanish Fork picked up two more runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth. Scoring three insurance runs in the seventh, the Dons held the Vikings scoreless. Marti Francom produced a double for the Vikings in the loss. At Judge, the Bulldogs and the Vikings battled to a 4-4 tie in the second inning. The game stayed deadlocked dead-locked until the fourth's lower half when Judge pulled ahead 7-4 on a three-run three-run rally. The Bulldogs picked up another three runs in the fifth. Pleasant Grove scored two seventh-inning runs, but pitcher Maggie Holden kept the Vikings from getting get-ting any closer. At Tooele, Roderick clubbed a double for the Vikings, but Pleasant Grove couldn't get a rally going against the Bufffaloes. Timpanogos visits on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start. 7T ,4 t . .... Six minutes min-utes into the contest, Viking Jay Helquist kicked in a shot from barely outside the penalty box. The Bees responded with a deep invasion sparked by a chest trap made by Dan Sumco, but Viking Brett Waters stole the ball and threaded his way across the midfield line. Although the Vikings kept the ball on the Box Elder end of the field for much of the first half, their long string of missed shots kept them stuck on a 1-0 lead. Helquist did make it 2-0 on a 30-yard shot in the half s closing minutes. This time Box Elder answered as Adam Bywater put the Bees on the board. Viking goalie Joey Webb held Box Elder scoreless through the rest of the half. The Vikings came out aggressive at the new period's peri-od's onset, but kept missing shots. Bywater, Austin Lee and Matt Frandsen led Box Elder in increasing the pressure on Webb, but the goalie held up well under the stress. Midway through the half, Viking Ty Gibb received a Mike Taylor pass, then hit a successful shot. It tipped the momentum momen-tum back to Pleasant Grove's favor, but efforts at making more goals remained re-mained frustrating frus-trating for the Vikings. They finally final-ly picked up their fourth goal on a shot by Derek Schwartz. The game's scoring was not over, though.
