Two veterans honored in special ceremonies By MARCELLA WALKER A special ' Veterans Day Observance was held last Thursday at the Alpine Valley Care Center where two veterans were honored for their service to their country. Wilson Hassenfritz and Herbert Thompson were presented with certificates recognizing their service. The program included a prayer by Branch President, Doyle Young; songs by a group of senior citizens ; a reading by Moneita Hair; introduction intro-duction of the honorees by Beth Lambert; reading of Veterans Day proclamation by Mayor David Holdaway; awarding of certificates by Administrator Terry Granter; closing song by senior citizens. Wilson Hassenfritz, 64, was the oldest Veteran honored. He served in the Army air Corps from Feb. 19, 1942 until Oct. 21, 1945 as an A.P. and engine mechanic. He participated in the WD45 Air Offensive Europe as a crew chief on a B29 over Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardenes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European-African-Middle Eastern medal with six bronze stars. Wilson married Ruth Bowden and they have three daughters. He worked as an electrician at Geneva Steel for 22 years. He devoted his whole life to his country, his family and his work. Herbert, 60, joined the army at age 20 on Dec. 16, 1942 and trained in the chemical Warfare Unit at Deseret chemical near Tooele, Utah and was stationed there. He says his tour of duty took him to every state of the U.S., also to the European, African, Mid-Eastern and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters. When trains were sent out with chemicals on them, these young men who were trained in handling the chemicals went along in case of an emergency which could arise. He was also sent on Liberty Ships carrying these chemicals to world areas. Herb met and married his wife, Helen, at the Deseret Chemical and they have four sons. After his realse from the service he was a truck driver and worked mainly in construction work. He has always loved sports and enjoyed keeping busy. |
