Show uznanzaz&nnaaaaaQanaaaz The View From Here By Ruth Roth jaannaaaaannfUKirinnfinnnnf Well, it does look as if Spring is finally here calendar wise and otherwise, which doesnt always happen. Many times even though March 20, arrives and proclaims the first day of Spring we have to wait far longer than we have done this year to see the signs of Spring. F or some people the first Spring day denotes the time to get the fishing gear all repaired and ready. Then follow some trips to see how certain fishing areas have weathered the winter. The camping equipment must be gathered by some people. This sometimes can take considerable time and effort. To begin with, the family members usually have left it in various parts of the house, garage, basement, and yard. The young son finally remembers that he left the thermos jug out on the picnic table the last time the gang were over last October. Someone else recalls that they left the sleeping bags in the car trunk ages ago. Somebody else finds the tackle box under his bed. As the neighbors or friends are rounding up their own equipment it is discovered that they still have your camp chairs, and folding metal table, or your ice chest, or your camp lantern or something else. Some families can hardly wait for the good Spring weather so that they can tackle the yard work. They find a special joy and satisfaction in bringing added beauty and usefulness to their yard and surroundings. They not only are blessed with green thumbs but they also seem to have a sense of timing to know just when to plant certain seeds and bulbs and other growing things. The first Spring days for some folks mean the time of preparation and planning so that they can take their boat and have some boating experiences. For some of them it is no problem as to where they will go. These are the ones who have a regular lake which down through the years has become the favorite for their particular family. Some of these people not only have a boat, but they also have a cabin or summer home of some type at the shore of the lake where they can go and take up ROUND THE feTOWNcEJ by I. Dwii Kmm Dear Reader: I think I would be a very ungrateful fellow if I let this period of time go by without devoting at least one column to Ike. I saw President Eisenhower personally only once. He spoke at the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City when he was campaigning for his second term as President. As he neared the completion of his very powerful address, I decided to sneak into the exit passage under the rostrum of the tabernacle. Its sort of a secret tunnel through which big shots can escape and avoid the crowds. Very few people know about that secret exit, but thats another story. Well anyway, I had my boy and my nephew with me. They were about eight years old at the time. We stood in that dimly lighted passage and listened to the assemblage break up above us and then momentarily sure enough, there came ike straight toward me. I waited to shake the hand of the American patriot that I admired most. I even edged a little nearer his trail of retreat so he couldnt miss seeing me, and do you know what that feller did? He took one look at me and then fastened his eyes on the little boys at my side. He shook hands with them both, ran his hand in their hair, said something gentle to them UTAH TECHNICAL COLLEGE AT PROVO ITS PRESENTS THIRD ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 1969 -- 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. You are cordially invited to become better acquainted with Utah Technical College at Provo, and find out the important role it plays in higher education in Utah, by attending our Open House. He was a man of character. He did all he could for his country and he just lay down to rest. Even his enemies couldn't find anything to hate about him. Some claim he didnt accomplish enough as president. We had seven and three quarter years during his administration of no dieing on battlefields, no wasted dollars in war expense and no suffering mothers in every hamlet city and town across the broad land. He like Lincoln, Jackson, and many other great patriots, proved that one can rise from humble beginnings to become President of the greatest country in the world. One finds from reading Ikes story that he didnt attend college for a couple of years following his graduation from high school, because his family was supporting his older brother, Milton, at the University of Michigan and could not afford to send Ike. He worked as a laborer in a creamry to earn money for his education. A chance to attend Annapolis pleased him. He passed high in his examination, but he was 20 years I ! We have a better Idea ,! This was fate, I suppose as Annapolis has never produced a president of the United States, but a number of West Pointers have been presidents. President Nixon stated when he spoke at the capitol over Ikes remains that "Ike was from the heart of America, spiritually as well as geographically. I would like to add economically. He came from the great m iddle class to become a great name, honored by peace-lovin- g people throughout the world. Well, great men have written and spoken about the General and these few humble remarks of mine may not mean too much, but I do feel better now, having written them. He walked past the adults to recognize two little boys, whom he knew would remember the thrill of shaking hands with a General much longer than any adult would. How fortunate we were to have had such a good wholesome, humble, exampla-tor- y man as our President. A man who had time in the throes of his campaigning to hesitate long enough to bless the little children. You know war time breeds immorality, bad habits and strips too many of our G Is of their integrity, but Ike stood out as an example of clean living, high standards and integrity. If hed have done nothing more than given assurance to the many American Mothers that her boy had a General who was an example whom her son could look upto for such attributes, Ikes purpose for living would have been fulfill- residence at different times during the Spring and Summer. Some people look forward to Spring so that they can just plain walk. It seems just a good way to really enjoy this time of the year and see the signs of Spring in the plants and grasses and trees coming to renewed life. For some women who love to cook, they can hardly wait for the foods which signify Spring to them, the first rhubarb not only means stalks for the children to eat with salt, but stewed or made into pies. The asparagus is looked for carefully and guarded jealously if you are lucky enough to own any. Some people connect parsnips with Spring because they at times leave some in the ground to enjoy at this time. Watercress and dandelion roots are looked upon as delicacies at this season by many. Spring is indeed a special time for most folks, it is a time of beginning, a time of starting over, a time to plan and a time to start carrying out those plans. It makes you appreciative that the long hard winter is over and thankful that you are here to enjoy SPRING. (one day only) 1 A and went on his way.
