Field Workers Make Rare Find A skeleton of an ancient Indian baby estimated to have lived 10,000 years ago and incidently the oldest yet discovered m North America is one of the rewards of a summer spent in field work by the University of Utah anthropology department under the direction of Dr. Julian H. Steward An idea of the primitive state of civilization to which this child belong ed is gamed by a study of their wea pons. Dr. Steward explains that tbe tribe lived long before the invention of the bow and arrow and that they used the atlatl, or throwing stick to which which was attached a crude spear. The interesting specimen was discoveied in the vicinity of Great Salt Lake and is one of the outstand ing discoveries of its kind in the weal. Other discoveries include a number of day figures or fetishes which the head of the anthropology department explains were used by the ancient inclians as agricultural idols. He further exulains that these figurines bear a clase connection to the ancient day fetishes of Central America. I)i.
