Show Gladstan Golf Course To Open March 1st Payson Loses to Orem In Overtime Play The Payson Lions proved their mettle last week when they forced highly touted Golden Tigers into overtime before the Bengals clinched their spot in the Class A Tourney by winning in the overtime period. 8 A screaming finish showed Orem ahead by eight points but buckets by Carter, Hansen and Tervort cut the margin to two points. Coach Kimball said this was one of the finest teams he has ever worked with and believes they have great promise for the future. Kevin Jensen Wins Fourth Place In Class A Wrestling Kevin Jensen returned home from the Class A state wrestling championship in Kearns last weekend with a fourth place medal and the distinction of decisioned Mascaro of Carbon. The semi-fina- ls brought a loss by Lafferty to Thomas of East and Jensen decisioned Rowe of Olympus. In the finals Jensen lost a decision to Black of Provo. The six Payson wrestlers won nine points for the Lions being the only Lion in the final event. In the first event on Thursday evening Jensen defeated Virgil of Kearns, Robert Porter defeated Peart of Box Elder, Rex Barney was defeated by Kawa of Weber, LaMar Jones was defeated by Harper of Bonneville. The teams played in both the old and the new Springville High School gymnasiums. The Senior Tourney games were played Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday is a rest day nd tournament finals are set for Friday in the new gym. It was a 16 team tournament with a double elimination and a consolation series for the first round losers. Payson Swimmers Compete in Meet Two Payson swimmers, Debbie and Teresa Nelson, competed in the Class A meet in Kearns last week for the BYU Dolphin swim team. Church Basketball Winners Nebo Stake ends its best Jr. year with a perfect league. The Second Ward won en all their games taking first place and First Ward losing only to the Second Ward. With all nine wards participating it was a good year with some very close games. One team stood out in sportsmanship play throughout the season; Spring Lake kept cool even in some very close games to take Sportsmanship Honors. First and Second Ward teams both lost the first night at the tournament. First Ward lost by 10 points and Second by two points. Craig Hone was the high scorer with 24 points. Second Ward won the second night by a large margin; again Craig Hone was the high scorer with 26 points with help from Val Winegar and Mike Hone getting double figures. It was a whole team effort First Ward. lost the second night being eliminated from the tourney. Richard Openshaw scored well to place on the top 15 score list of two games. Second Ward lost the third night. They lost to our neighboring Santaquin Second Ward. Craig Hone was the top scorer of the tourney of those who played three games scoring 66 points in the losing role. Both teams made good showings and we as a stake and town are proud of them. Fifth Ward took first place in the stake Sr. bracket. They played Monday night. February 24 at the Springville High School. President Hill presented the trophies for the league championship. He thanked the players and coaches for their outstanding work and also thanked the en referees. The Second Ward received the First Place trophy; First Ward received the Second Place trophy and Spring Lake received the Sportsmanship trophy. The top 10 Jr. players were as follows: First Ward, Richard Openshaw; Second Ward, Craig Hone and Val Winegar; Third Ward, Lee Tanner; Fourth Ward Jerry Kirk; Fifth Ward, Keith Twitchell; Sixth Ward, Craig Madsen; Park Ward, Scott Bigler; West, Lynn Rindlishbacher; and Spring Lake, Dale Mikesell. The Sr. top five were: Fifth, Gene Jones and Tom Hudson; Sixth, Richard Decker and Eddy Kallbacka; Fourth, Brent Crane. These trophies were presented by Frank Mitchell and Terry Kester. President Hill thanked Brother Glen Thatcher, Stake Activity Counselor; Brother Frank Mitchell, Sports Director; and Brother Terry Kester, Assistant Sports Director, for their work and long hours in making this the best season in ours, the Nebo Stake. en en Field Trials For Hunting Dogs Allowed Conducting in field trials for hunting dogs is a popular pastime for upland game bird hunters and dog trainers throughout the United States and is regulated in nearly all states by the Fish and Game Depart- ments. A recent survey showed 35 states, of the 45 responding, required a special permit for field trials. Utah is one of the states requiring this permit. No fees are charged for the permit in Utah, but 15 states charge from $1.00 to $50.00 for their permits. Written permission from the Director of the Division ofFish and Game is required for the Utah permit. Hunting licenses are not required of participants in Utah field trials. Birds used in the meets must be purchased from private sources and released the day of the meet. Hunting licenses are required in 10 states and laws were made in 10 states to distinguish between residents and Utah law makes no distinction. Promoters of dog trials in Utah must have evidence of their' lawful possession of birds they use and these birds must be tagged so they may be properly identified.
