Show Page C8 Thursday, March 27, 1986 Park Record XX Hi a. lil' I nnrncenfiM 'Witness for the Prosecution': Salt Lake City director moves up to mystery for PCP play by RICK BROUGH Record staff writer When Lynne Van Dam directed plays in the past, she said, the work was avant-garde, plays by Genet and Pinter. Today, she's directing a murder mystery, "Witness for the Prosecution," Prosecu-tion," for Park City Performances. The play is from a story by Agatha Christie and pivots on twists and counter-twists. It may be a more conventional work than Pinter's. But Van Dam said it isn't easier. "They gave me a pretty hard show." She has long been active with acting ac-ting and commercial voice-over work in Salt Lake City. And when i Director Lynne Van Dam. she heard from a friend, Park City resident Madeline Smith, that "Witness" was being produced, she expressed interest in getting a part. "Madeline and another woman there turned in unison and said, 'Why don't you direct it?'" she said. Van Dam said she is enthusiastic about the play, about working in Park City, and about bringing together a cast of Salt Lake and Park City actors. "Witness" is set in an English courtroom of the early '50s. Sir Wilfred (Larry Roupe), a veteran and wily British barrister, is called in to defend Leonard Vole (Stan Main), who is accused of befriending an older woman, inveigling her to put him in her will, and then killing JJfcMJUM! The first surprise of several is when Vole's German wife (Jasmine O'Brian), expected to be a sympathetic sym-pathetic witness, appears instead as a witness for the prosecution's case. Van Dam's cast ranges from professionals pro-fessionals to complete novices. "So I have to be a coach to some and a catalyst to others." She likes to use a technique that involves in-volves improvising, waiting and eventually drawing out the actor's creative abilities in the role. If that doesn't work, then she opts for a more controlled approach. In talking to the actors, she said, she concentrates on the character's background, his feelings. Instead of guiding them on specific line readings, for instance, she seeks a performance "from the heart." Her background is not just in theater, but in dance. In the early- to mid-'70s, she was a member Salt Lake's Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. Com-pany. Later she worked at a dancers' workshop in San Francisco, Fran-cisco, where she choreographed and directed. Back in Salt Lake, she works at the city's non-profit radio station, KRCL. In theater, she most recently appeared in "Talking With" at Theatre 138. But her dance background is ever present. Even sitting in a bus depot, Van Dam said, she looks at the people peo-ple and studies the movement of the crowd. She has had a chance to look at Park City crowds the sa, since she is a faithful attends U.S. Film Festival held h January.
