Show Wednesday, My an 31, 1974 Page 13 by Quicksilver wornl years ago. some film- startl'd making films that were strikingly ditferent from those lieing made by the film industries throughout the world. They showed their films to anyone who wanted to see them, anil were generally known as "underground" filmmakers. At worst , these artists were filmicly immature, intellectually forced that film was... deep. Yes, really deep) bits of trivia that could be forgotten quickly. At best, they were, and still are. visually stunning image's that quite often had no other message than their glorious colors and beautiful geometric or organic shapes that moved through the frame with all the force that the express train should have had. These films are essentially the purist form of film art possible films that were made strictly as an exercise in motion, color, light, and sound During the Sixties, the underground film techniques were used in light shows behind rock groups and in multimedia dance and theater Now. to complete the cycle started by independent filmmakers with 1G mm. cameras you can see film for film's sake in your neighborhood theater. 1 saw Heavy Traffic and The Nine fives of Fritz the Cat at the Capitol Theater in Salt Lake and had a visual and aural gas. Of course, both Heavy Traffic and Fritz have their statements to make, but both of them have their moments when they are strictly "light shows that are as good as anything the "underground can produce. The Kranitz production borrows a great deal from other til . but does it well enough for a purist to forgive him. The soundtrack on both films was excellent. In Fritz, the music was . 3-- D provided by Tom Scott and the L.A. Express, so I became doubly sad that the Joni Mitchell concert. in which they would have appeared, was canceled. )Both films are outstanding examples of their genre, and, whats more, they seem to get better with each film that Kranitz produces. A toast to Kranitz, and then one for the people in the back room who made this all possible. After rereading the first part of the column, I realize that a lot of people are going to throw both Fantasia and Yellow Submarine at me as examples of film for films sake. Be careful. Those film cans are heavy and you might give yourself a hernia when you throw them. The (b eat (latsby is a film that has received an enormous amount of publicity. It is a lavish production of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, complete with two superstars in the lead roles. Chances are quite good that the audience reaction will be mixed. Some people will be stunned by the excellent costumes and scenery. Others will enjoy the picture of decadence that is portrayed in the film. Still others will be thinking of the beer they could have been drinking with the money they paid to see the flick. pre-relea- se Fitzgerald's characters and scenery were always described in detail, while the film's characters ai;e considered very shallow portrayals. Many people wonder why Bedford and Farrow were picked for the roles. Your judgment will depend a great deal on why you go to the movies. FrancoN Truflaut's Day For N'iglit is still at the Opera House this Wednesday and Thursday. I recommend any of Truffaut's films very highly.
