Show THE Wednesday, July 24, 1371 MRK CITY Page COALITION 12 Enjoying the Bookmobile There must be at least one time directors career when he swears that he should just turn the cameras around and film the seeming chaos that is taking place behind the scenes. Putting temperamental artists like actors, actresses, Union cinematographers, in every film lighting technicians, sound crew, and the various designers together is sort of like putting the Viet Cong in the same room with President Nixon. Hie average director quickly abandons his plans when he realizes that the merciless camera might expose him as a bumbling phony as well. Hence, the number of films that have been made about film making is very small indeed. Sunset Boulevard is perhaps the first look at the world behind the . movies. Directed by Billy Wilder, the film stars Gloria Swanson as the actress whose star has faded, never to shine brightly again. For a film about Hollywood, it breaks one of the strongest Hollywood conventions of the era by actually having an unhappy ending. Cecille B. DeMille plays himself in a bit of cinema verte that is a brilliant piece of casting by Wilder. Both Buster Keaton and Eric Von Stroheim have parts in this classic. (Stroheim plays a chauffeur.) Considering the fates that awaited many of the actors who appeared in the film, the unhappy ending was appropriate, even prophetic. Frederico Fellini, the cinema superstar whose images are a powerful haunting feast for the eyes, examined the trauma of the director whose ideas have gone dry. S' 2 is collection of memories, insecurities, that may appear. Day For Night by Francois Truffaut is being considered as a possible classic already. Day For Night is a film about making films. (Clever how 1 pull things together, isnt it.) Even the title refers to a cinematic process where the scene appears to be taking place at night, but in reality was shot during the day. Truffaut plays a director who is beset by horrendous problems in the course of making a film. The flick is, in some ways, similar to both Sunset Boulevard and 84 in subject and humor. But Truffauts mistress is the cinema; and Truffaut is too polite to say anything nasty about his mistress in public. The film is a comedy, although the humor is a bit more subtle than most American audiences are accustomed to viewing. Since Truffaut is a Frenchman, the Opera House will (hopefully) have a subtitled version, which will also turn off a lot of people. But as a film critic and film lover, I have been waiting for Day For Night with the same sense of anticipation that most people reserve for a Rock super-sta- r. Truffaut is an infinitely more talented director than the average filmgoer in Utah has a chance to see, so with a little bit of effort on the filmgoer s part, the flick should be infinitely more rewarding. v rv vvvv conjunction with books. If that last statement seems pretentious, it is not nearly as pretentious as trying to describe the cinematic beauty and insight of 82 in a short film column instead of a masters thesis in film. Suffice it to say that I have a still from 84 that can excite the average film freak far more than any column I could write. Id be happy to show it to you, little girl. Films like Sunset Boulevard and 84 are now considered classics of the cinema, but as film is still a living art, critics must be aware of possible new classics signed out about 300 books, twice as many as were checked out the first time.
