Show Wednesday, July 24, 1974 Pages Planning Commission Sign Controversy The Park City Planning Commission met on Wednesday, July 17th, and the greater part of the meeting was devoted' to the issuing of sign permits. Mr. Jerry Blomquist of the Utah Sign Company, representing Mr. Bill Mawhinney, appeared seeking approval for an interior lighted plexiglas sign for Mawhinney Motors. Members of the Committee expressed an aversion to both the interior illumination and the plexiglas construction. Mr. Blomquist stated the proposed sign conformed to the guidelines he received from the city and questioned the reasons for its rejection. Mr. Blomquist, who did not have a color rendering of the sign, was asked to reappear before the Commission with alternative designs. Minutes later, Mr. Rick Gardner presented a proposed billboard to be employed as an advertising media for the Prospector Square development to be located on Route 248. The billboard to be erected was described as being 14 feet high ,and 48 feet long. The size of the sign raised some eyebrows in that no site had been determined for its placement. After lengthy debate, the Commission ap- proved the application with the provisions that the sign be placed at least 550 feet from the highway, that the sign be maintained, and that the permit be reviewed yearly. During the discussion of the two sign permit applications, Commissioner Bill Bertagnole ' expounded on a dilemma faced by the Commission. New sign ordinances are near completion and implementation but cannot yet serve as official guidelines. Also, it was revealed that Commission members were not in possession of copies of the existing sign regulations. In effect, the Planning Commission has one eye on emerging ordinances and one eye on existing ordinances while not having a copy of either. In another matter which could have future effects, the Commission decided to initiate action against Pressure Vessel Products, Inc. The company failed to respond to a registered letter requesting their presence at the Commission meeting. The Planning Commission determined the Pressure Vessel company has not complied with the stipulations attached to their conditional use permit and, therefore, are operating illegally. It was agreed that Chairman Victor Buck would send a letter to the City Council recommending that Pressure Vessel Products, Inc., be closed down if legally possible. At the outset of the meeting, a business license was granted to the Meyer Gallery. The craft store will be located at 305 Main Street, next to the Board of. Education. A business license and conditional use permit were approved for the United States Ski Team and National Training Center. Their offices are located at 537 Main Street in the old Mount Air Market building. far-reachi- ng The Pratt House, 213 Park Avenue, received a conditional use permit and business license to operate a nightly rental, providing a letter is submitted which verifies the Pratt House has the permission of the Catholic Church to use the church garage for parking. Roe and Fowler applied for a business license for a law office in the Silver King Bank, but since they had not applied for a conditional use permit, it was decided to wait until both the business license and the conditional use permit could be approved.
