Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Dentash, who is residing in Ankara, has called for the formation of a complete federation in Cyprus. His proposed federation, he said, would not be incompatible with the independence of the island nation. Cyprus is inhabited by 490,000 Greek Cypriots and 115,000 Turkish Cypriots who live in segregated com- munities. The main stumbling block to an accord seems to be Turkeys refusal to cease military operations. Turkish troops even expelled United Nations peacekeeping forces from one Cypriot town. BUENOS AIRES g Rodolfo Ortega Pena, the leading Peronist in Argentina, was assassinated on Wednesday, July 31st. The legislator was gunned down as he and his wife exited a taxi cab near the Buenos Aires downtown district. Mrs. Pena was slightly injured by glass which was sent flying by the machine gun fire. The death of Pena follows the slayings of former interior minister Arturo Mor and newspaper executive David Kraiselburd. On Wednesday, July 31st, former Nixon domestic policy advisor John D. Ehrlichman was sentenced to 20 months to five years in federal prison for perjury and conspiracy in connection with the White House plumbers case. Sentenced along with Ehrlichman, who proclaimed his innocence to the end, was G. Gordon Liddy, convicted Watergate burglar. Mr. Liddy was given one to three years. John Dean, former persidential counselor, was sentenced to one to four years in a California prison on Friday, August 2nd. Mr. Dean and his lawyers had requested a delay in the sentencing for his involvement in the Watergate cover-u- p pending the review of the newly released White House tapes, but the request was denied by Judge John Sirica. John B. Connally, former Secretary of the Treasury, was indicted on Monday, July 29th, on five counts of felony in connection with the controversial milk fund contribution. Mr. Connally was charged with accepting a $10,000 bribe from a large dairy cooperative in exchange for using his influence to raise milk price supports. Still another addition to the list of prominent persons of dubious character is Howard Hughes. Billionaire Hughes was indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday, July 30th, on charges of stock manipulation , fraud, and conspiracy. The charges relate to the refuses 1968 purchase of Air West Airlines . left-win- DACCA, BANGLADESH Bangladesh experienced its worst floods in twenty years on Wednesday, July 31st. The rising water covered over 12,000 square miles of farmland and resulted in heavy casualties. The death toll could reach 250 with as many as 15 million people being affected by the deluge. Compunding the danger of drowning, many persons are believed to have died of cholera and other diseases. Monsoon rains filled the Brahmaputra River to overflowing and four small northeastern towns are reported to be submerged. SAO PAULO, BRAZIL An epidemis of meningitis is reported to have taken the lives of 345 people in Sao Paulo in the month of July. Health officials said the disease is now on the decline and that the epidemic should be reduced to a few scattered cases by the end of August. WASHINGTON, D.C. It now appears certain that Richard M. Nixon will be impeached by the House of Representatives. White House aides have said Mr. Nixons chances of winning a House vote have evaporated and that his only hope to remain in office lies with the Senate. Vice President Gerald Ford stated on Saturday, August 3rd , that the situation in the House has eroded significantly and that he favors a vote to censure the President if a vote to impeach seems inevitable. Although there does not appear to be a majority of 67 two-thir- ds SALT LAKE CITY Mr. Wallace Reed Fletcher, 51, of Casper, Wyoming, was shot to death on the east side of Trolley Square on Thursday, August 1st. It was believed Mr. Wallace was accidentally slain by a ricocheting bullet. Police reported there have been instances of people shooting at pigeons in the area. SPORTS Defending welterweight champ Jose Napoles unleashed a barrage of punches in the ninth round to stop challenger Hedgemon Lewis on Saturday, August 3rd. Napoles maintained the offensive throughout the bout which was held in Mexioc Citys Sports Palace. The champion Lewis midway through the ninth and had him on stunned Detoit-bor- n the ropes. Napoles then landed blows at will and referee Ramon Berumen terminated the contest at the 2: 40 mark. The House Ways and Means Committee has reached a tentative agreement to make the buying and selling of professional sports teams less attractive. By closing a major tax loophole, the committees action could have significant bearing on future decisions to sell by major franchise owners. Marvin Miller, executive director of the major league baseball Players Association, came out in support of the National Football League Players Strike and condemned football club owners for misleading fans and the American public. Rick Wohluter competing for the U.S. in the Martin Luther King Games in Oslo, Norway, set a world record in the 1,000 meter run on Tuesday, July 29th. Wohluter posted a 1:13:9 clocking to better the old mark by 2.1 seconds.
