Show Wednesday, June THE 12, 1974 HARK CITY PARK CITY FLICKS Last week, I gave a small insight into the nature of film; that is, that film is mainly a directors medium. The director is the man who should make all the aesthetic decisions once the film is begun. How often does this occur in the course of an average year? How many directors make the decisions from the beginning to the end, including the final form the film is to take? The answer is very few directors have the privilege of controlling the film from beginning to end. The few that do are generally the superstar or the indirector-produce- r. dependent The usual circumstance is that the director gets first cut or the rough assembling of the film, but the studio reserves the right to control the final cut or the print cut. It may be the directors name in the credits, but its the producers money in the film, so the monetary considerations often win out over the artistic merit of the film. Director Arthur Penn relates this story about the film The Left Handed Gun in an interview for the book, Film Director as Super-sta- r: We had done that thing (shot the scene) on the assumption of Start the shot and lets see. If something miraculous happens, if she trips on her butt and falls, maybe well use that piece of film. You let it run, because you always hope for an accident. But they put in every foot of film. I couldnt believe it. I started slipping under my seat in embarrassment. It was on the screen, it seemed to me, about a week, a full week. And it was meant to be a flash cut. Arthur Penn is now in a position to command his own cutting, but his feeling of em barrassment is often repeated by directors who haven't been able to become directors of superstar status. The director doesnt . always use his privilege when its afforded him, but the best direc- tors want to control every aspect that they can. After the director gets by the producer, he still has to face the ratings board. These are the people who put the G, PG, R, or X on the flick. An X is usually considered the kiss of death to the filmmaker who takes his art seriously. The film is too good for scftpLune aims & PARK CITY RESERVATIONS Condominiums 5 down ALSO older elegant homes and quaint houses. Hence, the ratings board is gracious enough to show the director the error of his ways and tells him what he has to cut to get an R or a PG. Fine, except that the review board does not always get the point of a piece of film that they are seeing and might only go by the image it conveys m their mind. When they tell the director to cut to get an X, there is no ap- peal. GOODICS The garden y pit-fal- ls life-style- client star . Several of my books have written glowing reports of their edibility and the cookbook Joy of Cooking actually has an article for cream of nettle soup, but its still hard to sit down and eat nettles for the first time. I cooked them as one of my recipes said just put them in boiling salted water for a few minutes and then served them with butter. Lo and behold, the stingers had disappeared. The nettles themselves were so mild as to be almost flavorless and tasted fine. Guess we.ll have to have them again. Nettles are about the first wild things available in the spring and right now are plentiful by the road to Brighton. Theyre supposed to be an excellent source of Vitamins A and C and some of the minerals. My book says they are easily and positively identified and so are an important emergency food. Thats true about identification, for even with gloves on (which is how nettles should be collected), I got stung on the wrist once. Therefore, I really hesitate to describe how to identify a plant in an article like this. After all, I wouldnt want to be accused of making half of Park City sick. What I would suggest, if youre interested in wild eating, is to get a bode on the subject. There are quite a few books now written (Hi edible plants. Since the upper Pliocene era, as a matter of fact. However, they didnt get their big break until the early 17th century, when the Pilgrims served four of them at their first harvest dinner. Since then, the turkey has had its ups and downs. At the turn of the century, the turkeys population was at an e low, but today it 42 states and is definitely inhabits making a comeback. This is true, not only in the wilds, but also at the supermarket. With the rise in the cost of beef last year, the popularity of all types of poultry increased. Turkey is one of the best buys at the meat counter, so buy a large enough bird for a roast turkey dinner, a few cold turkey sandwiches, and for trying these two-tastleftover dishes. JENNIFER GIDDINGS SHARP when Im almost positive I know is just growing hapby all-tim- One director who has made several films that have become very popular is William Friedkin, who has directed The French Connection and The Exorcist. Strangely enough, one of his earlier films might be considered his best. The Boys in the Band is certainly his most courageous film to date, because it deals with a difficult subject that had never been dealt with honestly before. The film is an adaptation of a play, with all of the inherent that beset a film director who is trying to bring a stage production to the screen. Friedkin has done an admirable, though not flawless, job. The entire film takes place in an apartment and the patio, as a group of friends and lovers gathers to celebrate Harolds birthday. The film might seem a bit stinted since the setting is a direct carryover from the play, yet this might be attributed to a lack of imagination or, possibly a lack of clout with his producer. Finally, the subject matter, homosexuality, might seem a bit old hat for some, but it is a subject that is still surrounded by myth for most people. The Boys in the Band certainly is not file final look at the subject of alters. The film hardly native touches on what it is like to be Gay in a straight world.
