Show Wednesday, September 25, 1974 Books By Now that it is once again that season when 22 brawny young men face each other on an artificial field and indulge in an artificial playing out of the territorial imperative, I guess I should mention that the past year or so has seen the publication of several books concerning the computerized mayhem known as football. Far and away the best seller is Semi-TougDan Jenkins Jenkins does for football what Ring Lardner did years ago for. baseball. He sets up a tape recorder before Billy Clyde Puckett, the great Giant fullback? and lets him babble on about the fantastic things that happen to him in the week preceding the Super h. Bowl. David Halberstrom (The Best and the Brightest) says that it is a marvelous book about sports... but not about sports. It mocks contemporary America mores, Madison Avenue, racial at- titudes, and it mocks like me. It goes spor-tswrite- rs without saying that Semi-Toug- h mocks Sports Illustrated writers like Dan Jenkins. Lardners vehicle, Ring baseball illiterate helping players write letters home, allowed readers to see what bush league ball players were like. In Jenkins' novel, the reader not only gets a look at the con- temporary hero the football superstar, but he also gets a scandalous look at himself. Its great entertainment. Much like Semi-Toug- h, but definitely NOT funny, is Peter Gents North Dallas Forty. And as they used to say in the old c Rooks days, Gent knows of what he writes. A former offensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, Gent allows the reader to postulate about which character has a real life model. That is, if you know the roster of the Cowboys. Those who do, claim that much is If it is, a lot of hero worshippers are going to have to reconsider the quarterback as hero. After following Phil Elliot through the last eight days of his professional football career, through the pain of old injuries! the drugs that dull it', the drugs that make life tolerable, the savagery of the brutes (and I use the term literally) who indulge in insane violence for thrills, and the inhuman administrators who fill in players by computer, the reader is a little less naive about our national (EDW Dteal Estate There are others, of course, but the two novels stand out as a couple of the best things yet written about football. Gary Shaw gives approximately the same picture in Meat on the Hoof, but and as such thats gives credence to Peter Gent. All three are worth reading, but Gaits novel is my favorite. have just gained broad the recording industry has been able to improve its sound quality by recording onto magnetic tape instead of directly onto a lacquer Condominiums Raw Land Residential Commercial 6 med.-l- g. 2 tbs. oil HAL TAYLOR ASSOCIATES P.O. But now the miracle of magnetic tape is also causing a bit of a dilemma. Twenty years ago, theaters had far better sound systems than anyone could put in their homes, but today there are probably at least ten stereos in Park City that can outperform the system in the Opera House (in terms of fidelity, not total sound output, although there might be a few that can outperform the theater in that respect as well). It is no secret that the Hi-industry has made in the past strides astonishing few years both in technical advances and sales. Add the fact that there is now a serious interest in sound quality in television, with the possibility of stereo or quad broadcasts in the next decade, and there is reason for theater owners to question the quality of their own sound. Theaters main problem with sound is that they are saddled with an obsolete method of reproducing sound. As for Herbie the Walt Disney studios usually make their live action films seem as though they were made by amateurs. While Herbie is good for the kids, I would only recommend Disneys animated films for adults. I IUWs ; or- always musical portions of the soundtrack that will be enhanced by quad. The day is rapidly approaching when television and high fidelity electronics equipment will be able to do everything that the present day movie theater is capable of doing better than the theater. If the film industry wants to survive in anything close to its present form, improvements like magnetic sound will have to be the standard instead of the exception. Theaters can use magnetic sound strips if they have a modern projector. If they do, they not oily have better sound fidelity, but they also have the capability of stereo or quad sound tracks. If all theaters were so equipped the film director could use the quad effect to create moods that totally involve the audience. Imagine the suspense that could be built up by the door creaking open behind you, while the heroine looks out over you in horror. The possiblities that quad can create are so vast that it will seem like a natural addition to the film media. It asks hew many peppers did Peter pick, when, in fact, the real question should have bwm, what did he do with all those peppers? Well, as I heard it, he took them home to his wife and she told him to take his peppers and stuff them. So, in keeping with this theme, Ive decided to share with you two recipes for stuffed peppers (generally acknowledged as ones having been used by Peter).
