The Goat bested Park Citys Muckers in the final match of the tournament, 28-Two thousand raucous rugby aficionados were on hand to watch the David-Goliat- h affair, wildly exuberant in their support of the underdog Muckers. The score did not hardtell the true tale, as the Utah clubs hooked up in a wide-opehitting display of rugby. Each club reached the final match via contrasting routes. The Dead Goat had a bye in the first round, thoroughly trounced Colorado State University in the second round, and had their third round opposition forfeit the match after five minutes of play Sunday morning. Park City struggled against the Rio Grande Touring Side in their opening match, played brilliant rugby to upset the Edmonton Clansmen in round two, and came up with a victory against the Albuquerque Aard-vark- s in Sundays semi-finround. It was anticipated that the Dead Goats stiff est opposition was to come from defending champion Aspen, Colorado, in the semi-finalBut that matchup failed to happen when Aspen was upset by a ragtag group from the University of Utah in the opening round of play. Injuries during the course of the Aardvark game to Norm Hall, Tom Randall and Corky Foster certainly did nothing to enhance the Muckers chance against the Dead Goat. Much of the crowd expected the finals to resemble the Russian armys invasion of Czechoslovakia. The early moments of the game belonged to the Dead Goat as they aggressively drove into Park Citys end of the pitch. Soon the Salt Lake City side converted a penalty goal, and that score was followed quickly by a try and a conversion to give the Dead Goat a 94 advantage. But for the next ten minutes the momentum turned, or at least evened out as play was directed into the Dead Goat end several times by the Muckers. When the Goat scored another try to make the tally 13-Park City appeared to be hopelessly behind. Then the Muckers hit the scoreboard with a penalty goal by Steve Anderson. The remainder of the first half saw the Muckers and the crowd came alive as the home club mounted attacks to within several yards of the Dead Goat goal line. Goliath was on top, but David was still slinging, 3. -- n, last-minu- te al s. 0, For twenty-fiv- e minutes of the second period the two finalists became involved in a tussle that set the crowd roaring. The Muckers were able to thwart any scoring attempt by the Dead Goat, and put the favorites in serious jeopardy on several occasions. Two stout defensive stands by the Dead Gnat were the keys to the final outcome of the game, as the momentum had completely swung over to the Muckers at this point. The larger men of the Goat had been run to a frazzle by the Muckers wide-ope- n style of play, and if the home club had any hope at all, it was to score now and hope that the Goat play dead. The Goat held. They came alive in the last ten minutes with a penalty goal and two trys and a conversion. Maua Aiono scored on a forward rush for the first try, and then his nephew Paulo started a blindside movement which carried back to the open for eighty yards and the final score. This last movement was classic rugby, and the Muckers knew they had been beaten by an excellent rugby side. Third place was awarded to the Albequerque side, fourth went to the Clansmen R.F.C., fifth to Aspen A, sixth to Minneapolis, seventh to Colorado State University, eighth to Aspen B, ninth to Kansas City Bulls, tenth to Rio Grande, eleventh to Steamboat, twelfth to Telluride, and thirteenth to University of Utahs up one day, forget the next outfit. Outstanding matches preceding the finals were contests between Minneapolis R.F.C. and the Aardvarks, a 8 thriller which put the Varks into the Aspen As smooth display of attacking rugby against Colorado State; the Clansmens show of scoring strength against Minneapolis, Rio Grandes 4 squeaker over Steamboat, and Park Citys coronary semi-finwin over the Aardvarks. But probably the crowd-pleasof all crowd-pleasewas the highly of vonfrontation the Edmonton Clansmen pitched by the Park City Muthas. The local side took immediate advantage of the Canadians tight binding to slither from the loose scrums like slippery snakes. Captain Jan Foster was the first Mutah to touch down but the Clansmen didnt seem to care, claiming afterward that in the heart of the rucks is where the game is won or lost. The final score was lost g somewhere within the tunnel. 14-- semi-final- s; 6-- al er rs in-go- al, game-endin- 13-- 3. . . . would like to say thank you to the Park City Rugby Club for the very suc- cessful Rugby Tournament this past weekend!! 124 E.Colorado Street TELLURIDE COLORADO Iff youre headed our way, bring in the Coalition and say Hello Summit Park Home Sites of Distinction PARLEYS CANYON View Lots Available 278-527- 5 GREG SOTER BOOKMOBILE SCHEDULE : 10 AM - 3 PM : Elem.
