Show Wednesday, July 3, 1374 Page 2 The political upheaval of recent weeks has not only focused public attention on the circumstance of city government but it has also created an increased demand for the printed word in Park City. Conjunctive with this desire to be informed, questions have arisen as to the ownership and management of the Park City. Coalition. Also, the allegation has been made characterizing the Coalition's position in the political situation as being It is hoped that some of the questions can be answered and that some of the misconceptions can be corrected. The Park City Coalition was conceived in November of 1973 by Don Prescott, Jan Peterson and John Clayton. The three felt a need existed in Park City for a news media which was responsive to the community and which was staffed by fulltime Park City residents who strive for professionalism and accuracy. As residents and property owners in Park City, the Coalition staff would harbor vital personal interest in the day to day oc-- ; currances of our community. We feel the validity of this hypothesis has been proven by our end product. Unfortunately, due to the burden of previous commitments, Mr. Peterson was forced to withdraw from active participation in the publication of the Coalition after he had helped it to its literary feet. Publishers Prescott and Clayton deeply regret the loss of Mr. Peterson. His contributions to the original concept of our newspaper and his labors to insure its success comprise a large part of its foundation. Since our first publication on February 20th, 1974, the Coalition has grown to a staff of six fulltime employees and two part-tim- e employees. In addition, we feel we possess an invaluable asset in the persons of our contributing feature writers. Since our inception, we have moved from a small room in the old blue church on Park Avenue to our new office on Main Street. While not luxurious by any stretch of the imagination, our new quarters are certainly more conducive to a professional product. We conduct all of our own investigation and assume full responsibility for the integrity of everything we print, excepting letters to the editor. one-side- d. , we feel this summation is not representative of the facts. To date, all subjective evaluations of the political situation have appeared in quotes and the Coalition has neither come out in support nor in opposition to either side of the issue. We did urge Mayor Price to reconsider what we thought to be an impulsive action but this prompting was based on our evaluation of Mr. Prices capabilities as mayor, not on the merits of his contentions against Mrs. Lehmer. Admittedly, the Coalition has devoted more space to Mr. Prices comments and opinions than has been consumed by the statements of others, the prime example being our special edition of June 15th. We offer no apologies. In our opinion, the Mayors resignation was a news event worthy of extraordinary media attention. The comments made were those of Mr. Price and no endorsements were offered. This does not preclude an editorial stand in the future but at present we havent joined anyones team. Mayor Price has simplybeen the most accessible of all the involved parties and he is certainly not reticent in expressing his opinions. Regarding the special edition, which was conceived, written, printed, and on the streets in less than twenty-fou- r hours, it was our intention to include the responses of all Council members in the following issue. Unfortunately, only two Councilmen could be reached by our Sunday night deadline. Those we were able to contact expressed regret concerning the resignation and remarked that, in their opinion, Mr. Price had performed well during his tenure of office. Little or no elaboration was forthcoming. It is the objective of the Coalition to funnel its editorial and investigative efforts towards issues pertinent to the community. Our desire is to objectively inform the citizens of Park City, not to become mired in personality clashes or to degrade our competitors. 9:00 a.m. Cash Prizes for 3 3 on Lehmer City Attorney Carl Nemelka is expected to file for a declaratory judgment this week on Mrs. Mary Lehmers eligibility to serve on the Park City Council. This course of action was unanimously decided by the Council at the special meeting of June 20th. The declaratory judgment was recommended by both Mrs. Lehmer and Mayor John Price. When the case comes to court, the facts pertinent to Mrs. mars elibibility will be presented to a judge by Mr. Nemelka. Aftef reviewing both sides of the issue, he presiding judge will rule on the legality of Councilmans Lehmers holding office. The presentation of relevant information will be handled only by the City Attorney, but parties representing the opposing points of view may submit data to Mr. Nemelka. In such cases, the attorney appearing before the court does not necessarily do the investigative work, but it is generally believed Mr. Nemelka has done considerable research involving the impending case. It is anticipated that a decision will be reached sometime in July at the Coalville Courthouse. Sponsored by.
