Times Correspondent With the first day of summer just one week away, the irrigation canals and ditches in Orem are now flowing with water, just as they have done since 1863, when early settlers with primitive tools dug a ditch from the mouth of Provo Canyon. The ditch, which measured meas-ured two and one-half feet deep and six feet wide, carried the precious water out over two thousand acres of parched ground to bring life to the desolate area. Kids Village, located in the Cross Pointe shopping center at .1600 North State Street, is a new learning environment set up to help children of all ages broaden their horizons. The bakery, cafe and bank are just three of many workshops to be found in the village. Ann Whittaker, the creator cre-ator and founder of Kids Village, says the business started many years ago. Her son, in the first grade at the time, was struggling in school and she wanted to find something he would be good at beyond just reading, writing and arithmetic. "I wanted a place that could teach life skills like fixing fix-ing stuff or money management," manage-ment," Whittaker said.
