Finally, Downey picked up throwing the javelin in junior high. While waiting to participate partici-pate in other events, a track coach challenged her to throw the javelin. After watcliing her throw, the coach encouraged her to pursue it and that skill took off from there. So how has Downey been able to achieve success in all four sports? "I guess I have really good motivation," she said. "Ever since I was little I was naturally talented, so I knew if I focused on a sport and wanted to get good at it and tried my hardest I could get good at it." Being good is putting things modestly. Downey has been recognized as an all-state basketball player, an all-state caliber Softball player, a second-team all-region golfer, and she finished fifth in the javelin at last year's 4A state championships. In addition, she has helped her teams to four runner-up finishes at state, as well as state championships in basketball and track. A second track title is likely to come in the next month. "They don't come any better than Delyse Downey," Reed said. "I'm going to miss her a lot. She has been a great asset to Orem High School for the last four years." Although she has seen tremendous success on her various playing fields, Downey still doesn't consider that the best part of sports. "The best part of sports is the people I meet, even the people I play against," she said. "It's been great, I've met some of my best friends through sports. The basketball team was the hardest team I've ever had to leave because I've played with a lot of them since I was little." It can be expected that the feeling is mutual with Downey's peers. "She's a great friend, she's a lot of fun, she likes to laugh, she's a jokester," Reed said. "I don't think you'll ever hear her say a bad thing about anybody. She's just a great all around person." Sometime in the next month Downey's reign Bruins Continued from Page 8 with these teams, we've got to believe that we can. Hopefully this is a turning point for us this year." I Lone Peak 10, Mountain View 8: The good news for the Mountain View baseball team is that it is very good at playing play-ing from behind. The bad news is that the Bruins have been forced to do so in almost every game of region play. Tuesday's game against Lone Peak was no different as Mountain View surrendered five runs in the bottom of the first and couldn't quite pull off the comeback in a 10-8 loss. "I'd almost rather have them lay an egg than to tease me like that," said Mountain View coach Chris Cooper only half jokingly. Early on, it looked as if the Knights would win going away after a leadoff single by Nate Newman, a double by Max Harris and a homer by Kade Andrus helped pave the way for a five-run first. "He's kind of our guy," said Lone Peak coach Danny Schoonover about Newman. "It seems like when he leads off with a hit we usually have a pretty good inning." However, the Bruins battled back and started to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in Iron Decor! i Rosettes & Flowers - 3332 ill For Frex Prioa UarUV ftom - Knm "r ' metalmort.blz just off 1 2300 S. exit 450 E. The key hits of the fifth inning were back-to-back doubles by Danny Dan-ny Nelson and Mark Garrett. Garrett's shot to left -center drove in two runs. The Bruins continued to fight in the latter innings. In the sixth, they loaded the bases and Garrett Gar-rett came through once again with a two-RBI single down the third base line. The threat was put down when Marcus Draper hit into a double play. In the seventh, Jordan Gustin and Chad Gonzales each hit doubles, dou-bles, but Mountain View only got one run out of it and the comeback effort came up short. The loss puts a damper on a huge game from Garrett. The junior center fielder went 4-for4 4-for4 with five RBI. "I wish I had nine of them," Cooper said referring to Gar- Home Projects Made Easy! The win was big for a Lone Peak team that now joins Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove in a tie for fourth place in region with 2-3 records. "It's a lot better than being 14," Schoonover said of his team's record. "We've got a good team. We're as good as anybody in the region, but anything any-thing can happen."
