Show Thursday, April 5, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 5 notes NEWS AND IDEAS FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS Retiring teacher takes class on bookstore shopping spree Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAFF In a literacy version of an Easter egg hunt, third graders in Nadine Corral's Suncrest Elementary class scurried around bookshelves finding reading gems around every corner and perched on every end stand. The occasion was a very special field trip to Barnes & Noble Bookseller in Orem Tuesday courtesy of Corral. Each student was apportioned $16 with which they could purchase the books of their choosing. Cristian Martinez was specifically spe-cifically hunting for art and science related books. One of his selections included "Scratch and Sketch," a book of colorful color-ful sheets of paper covered in black wax that can be scratched off to create pictures and designs. Wide-eyed children explored every inch of the spacious kids section and used calculators to make sure they stayed within their budget. "It's very cool," Martinez said. "It's like a book paradise, very beautiful." While many pupils quickly snatched up exciting -sounding titles, a more discerning Zoey Lowther carefully reconnoi-tered reconnoi-tered scads of books before making her picks. OPERA APPRECIATION Courtesy Cherry Hill Elementary School Singers with the Utah Opera and Symphony perform for students at Cherry Hill Elementary School during a March 20 assembly. To introduce the art of opera to the children, the opera members played a game called "Who Wants to be an Opera Star?" The gathering was part of a monthly "Art in the Box" program at Cherry Hill in which professional artists and arts groups immerse students in various art genres. The program was created by a teacher and two parents to fill the gap created by the loss of the school's Title I funding previously used to employ an art teacher. bruin BRAYOEN SANTO So Bruins, last week was pretty crazy. Her aim on the field trip was to acquire chapter books and some easy readers. "I think I'll be able to get four if I don't spend so much on chapter books," Lowther said. John Patten, Suncrest Elementary El-ementary School's principal, said the field trip shopping spree came about nearly on accident. Corral, who he calls a literacy guru, had been stocking away funds over the years in the Alpine Foundation fund, a savings account for classroom materials, and had lost track of her balance. Although Al-though she originally planned to buy a book for each of her students, the discovery of the unexpected nest egg led her to change her plans, and schedule the field trip. "It allowed some students who probably haven't been to a public library let alone a bookstore book-store to see all the wonderful things out there," Patten said. "Her hope is that it will be one of those unforgettable days for her kids. That they'll look back on it as a turning point." Corral, who is retiring at the end of the year after 28 years of teaching, thought she had a balance of $80 in the Foundation Founda-tion fund when in reality there was $318. "That's why I call it my little Lots of stuff was going on, but the two main events were final elections and State Jazz Band Competition. So, we went to the final elections assembly, where it was "Red Team" vs. "Gold Team." There was even a surprise sur-prise appearance by the white team (the student council right now). "I thought it would be more fun for them to pick out their own books." More than just providing a memorable experience for the kids to get their own books, Corral hopes her students learn bookstores and libraries are a virtual treasure trove of adventure, adven-ture, wonder, and learning. "These are big decisions," she told her students as they showed classmates their selections, selec-tions, punched numbers into watching them riding a little plastic tricycle (with matching motorcycle helmet and leather jacket) to drinking a raw egg. Oh, there was lots of dancing, too. And two Mr. Rich jokes. That was pretty crazy. Then the Jazz Band left to Murray High School for state jazz.
