Use music to help develop concentration skills. In a famous study at the University of California at Irvine, students who listened to Mozart’s Sonata for 2 Pianos (k448) increased visual-spatial intelligence by about 10 percent. Another recent study demonstrated that students who play a musical instrument scored higher on average on the SAT than children who did not play music. Music can either help or hurt concentration. In a recent study from my clinic, we had 12 teenagers play the game Memory while they listened to different types of music: rock, rap, classical, and no music. Rap was associated with the worst performance. The rock group also scored poorly. Interestingly, the group did slightly better with classical music than no music at all. Another technique for developing clear focus is the “One Page Miracle.” On one piece of paper write down the following headings: YOUTH cont. from page 1 logically friendly gardening technique worldwide. LDS missionaries are receiving training at the Missionary Training Center, then taking what they’ve learned, and copies of teaching material around the globe to help those they come in contact with. For example, under relationships, “I want to have a kind, loving, connected relationship with my children.” When you finish writing all of your goals make multiple copies of it and prominently display it where you can see it several times each day. Frequently ask yourself, “Is my behavior getting me what I want?” This exercise helps to keep you focused on the things that are most important in your life. Work to develop a “concert state” by relaxing your body and developing mental clarity. Raking and weeding. The Salt Lake City youth group and their leaders used Eden’s Kimber Academy as their base for the activity. After first arriving Friday morning around 10:30 a.m., the group was personally introduced to Mr. Bartholomew, writer of the most popular book on gardening ever published. The Square Foot Gardening book continues to outsell all other gardening books year after year. 7. Treat Brain Problems Early Many people sabotage themselves by denying they have brain problems until significant damage has been done to their lives. Most psychiatrists feel that there is a significant brain component to depression, anxiety problems, attention deficit disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse problems, and even violence. Unfortunately, the stigma associated with seeing a psychiatrist still prevents people from seeking help for obvious problems. Clearly, the earlier people seek help for these problems the less negative impact they will have on their lives. If you struggle with any of these problems you are not alone. According to the National Institutes of Health 49% of Americans will have a psychiatric illness (depression, anxiety, ADD, OCD, substance abuse problems, etc.) at some point in their lives. Successful people have problems, they are smart enough to seek help. The earlier the better. Your life can only improve with an optimized brain. “Mel’s Mix” for use in garden beds, loading and unloading locally donated hay and straw, and preparing the garden center by weeding, leveling, and raking. Though temperatures soared up towards 100 degrees, the group retained their enthusiasm for the project. Supervisors commented on the groups, “ . . . eager beaver attitude. We wanted to help with a project where the youth could learn something while helping with a worthwhile endeavor.” Comments from the youth included, “Even with the itchy straw, hornets, earwigs, and maggots, it was really fun!” “It’s great to be part of a worldwide project.” “It’s good to get out of your own little world and do something different.” The date marked the first year anniversary since Mr. Bartholomew moved to the Eden. He commented on the support the community has given him and the foundation since his arrival. Property owner Paul Judd has donated the garden space on the city center square in Eden; Kimber Academy has opened their facilities for educating visitors and volunteers; Grass Plus has donated supplies; Ben Toone, owner of the Eden General Store, has hauled in compost material to the site; and many area church groups are organizing and donating time and energy to ensure the success of the community garden. Mr. Bartholomew’s national fame includes the popular weekly Square Foot Gardening show that ran for several years on PBS. He also managed a demonstration garden at Thanksgiving Point near Lehi, Utah before moving to Ogden Valley. The Square Foot Gardening Foundation would like to welcome individual and group volunteers to come and help at the site on Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Afterwards, free gardening demonstrations are held.
