Neighbor Enjoys Small Town Friendliness Driving home today, I spotted the dear lady holding the neon orange “slow” sign just west of the dam. I couldn’t help but smile as I approached her, because I knew that her friendly wave would be directed to me in short order. She uses her construction job as a vehicle for spreading the friendliness that living in a small town has come to mean to me in the eight months I’ve lived in Eden. My little boys love going to the Valley Market because the folks who work there know them by name. The newspaper lady and the water meter lady came to my door to introduce themselves! I can’t drive two blocks without someone in facing “traffic” waving, whether we know each other or not. I can’t help but gush about how friendly, helpful, inclusive, and genuine my neighbors are. They invite us to all kinds of events, arrange play-dates with our kids, bring goodies over, watch our house, and mysteriously appear whenever we need help with something. As I see it, three scenarios can occur when you go on a walk or jog, and encounter somebody else. The first, the people walk past each other briskly, averting their eyes. The second, the people exchange a polite smile or short greeting. The third, the people stop and talk. And talk. And talk. And talk! I may not be as physically fit as I was back in Denver, but I’m thrilled to say I have some wonderful friendships brewing! Committee Urges Community Not to Sign Feasibility Study Proposal If you are not in favor of the proposition to incorporate our beautiful community of Eden, please read the following and act accordingly. The members of the AD HOC Committee (signatories below), representing the interests of more than 35 landowners and residents opposed to the proposed incorporation, recommend that you do no sign the forthcoming petition requesting the initiation of the required feasibility study. Your signature on the petition will help the proponents of incorporation meet the minimum criteria of 10 percent of the property owners, and 7 percent of the value of the total market value of the acreage within the boundaries of the proposed city. So do not sign the petition, and urge others not to sign. If you desire further details regarding this issue, please contact any of the following. Thank you. Sharon Vause, Chairperson Shelley Sontag, Backup Chair Jay Bachman Haynes Fuller Wayne Pack Reader Enjoys Nostalgic Articles I am a subscriber to The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS. I enjoy reading the paper very much, especially the nostalgic articles. I grew up in Thank you! Wendy Toliver, Eden Marsha Rasmussen, Eden Respectfully, Robert G. Aldous, Burlington, North Carolina Corrections Resident Would Like to See Wolf Creek Hike an Annual Event Having just returned from the Weber Country Park Hike and Trail Ride (trailhead on the north side of Powder Mountain road) this beautiful summer morning (July 12), I am writing to express my appreciation to Haynes Fuller, Kent Fuller, Ben Toone and Robert Fuller for their dedicated efforts to keep this awesome trail/road access and property open to all of us, guaranteed by the Utah Supreme Court. It was a sight to see Ben Toone and family and friends flipping sourdough pancakes for everyone, and Kent Fuller heading up the cowgirls and cowboys and their trusty mounts on the 2.5-mile trail. The youngest I saw was two-year-old Emily Gold, riding on her dad’s back and the wisest—Joe and Eunice Schlenker, Valley residents for over 20 years. Thanks to the more than 100 hikers and riders who came in support, and who came to enjoy the spectacular views of Ogden Valley that can be seen from this vantage point. Let’s make this an annual affair. Huntsville, and still feel some connection with the Valley. I would like to share observations concerning several recent items in your paper. I read with interest about my dear friend LuJean Wilson and her running adventures with her daughters and granddaughter. I’m glad that Wanda Winter and Pauline Jensen were featured as being in the service during WWII, along with Shirley Fuller and Christie Page. In the June 15, 2003 edition on page five, I recognized my grandfather, Peter Janse, as the man accompanying Ben Wood in the Trapper Village article. It’s possible that I may be the child pictured. The sheepskin coat and aviator helmet are consistent with what winter ware I wore as a kid. I also tagged along with my granddad often. In the same edition, I read with interest the item on Weber High School. I attended that institution, graduating in 1943. I noted several dates in the accompanying time line (Milestones) that are incorrect. Bonneville High School was constructed some time in the 1950’s. Roy High School was built about 1960 and 1961. The site for the new Weber High in Pleasant View was purchased in the mid 1960’s. I was employed with the Weber School District and was involved in the purchase of this property from the Ellis family. Finally, the students moved into the present Weber High in the early 1970’s. Thank you for letting me sound off. I look forward to reading future issues of The Ogden Valley News. In the July 1, 2003 edition of The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS, it was stated incorrectly in the heading for the historical photo that the picture was of the Huntsville church. The photo was taken in front of the Huntsville Relief Society Hall on October 28, 1915, the day of the building’s dedication. Women in the community raised money to build the hall by holding bazaars and craft fairs. They desired to have a warm place to meet, and a place where they could leave up their quilting frames. “Hey Orville! . . . Bet you feel like a snack right about now . . .uh? Also, in the June 15, 2003 issue, it was stated incorrectly that Pat Thomas of Eden had been named as Supervisor of Human Resources for the Weber County School District. Thomas has been assigned as principal of North Ogden Elementary.
