Show Volume III, Issue VII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 11 February 1, 2001 Student News Valley Elementary Students Enjoy Journey to Ancient Egypt By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Staff Valley Elementary students look forward to the school’s annual Egyptian Day hosted by the sixth grade classes. Sixth graders play the roles of slaves, pharaohs, oracles, and priestesses during the exotic event. Younger students take an adventurous ride on a barge down the Nile, are instructed by priestesses and slaves, enter a darkened pyramid, and, once inside, enjoy learning about the ancient Egyptian mummifying process. Students also have the opportunity of learning about ancient Egyptian culture through the many projects created and exhibited by the sixth grade students while on their tour of Egypt. Though it took 70 days to create a mummy in Egypt, it takes Mrs. Evans’ sixth grade class considerable less time to mummify a real chicken. Valley Elementary students bow to sixth grade Egyptian Priestesses before leaving for their trip down the Nile. This is about the fifth year students have been able to participate in the project, and Mrs. Evans can show you four other mummified chickens in her classroom to prove it! Students wash and clean a whole, gutted chicken—minus the head and feet—then salt it well. From there they immerse the chicken in a bag of salt with no air. The salt is changed daily for eight days, and then the chicken is left to sit and petrify until it can be wrapped. While joining the curious students on this adventure, the oracle at the entrance of the Egyptian pyramid at Valley Elementary predicted that students and journalists visiting the pyramid that day would have an enjoyable trip—if, while in route, they didn’t fall off of the barge traveling the Nile, and become eaten by an alligator. Believe it or not, the oracle was right! Students listen and observe intently as sixth grade Egyptians prepare a real mummified chicken for entombment.
