Letters to the Editor Jones Land Sale: What’s Right Will Prevail Responding to the “Uh-huh, it’s a groan” editorial on January 8 in the Standard-Examiner, (Here’s hoping land dispute fades to black”): This dialogue seems unprofessional. Such a blunt, one-sided stand by a leading newspaper on a public issue was shocking. Surely there was something positive for the plaintiffs somewhere in this long fight. This court battle is not about a handful of disgruntled Jones and Burton neighbors trying to discredit county government. Maybe the paper could have addressed the fact that over 1,000 Weber County residents gave Commissioner Burton their written protests immediately after the land sale to Jones, but were ignored. Obviously, the authors of the editorial have never been on what used to be their parkland. They have taken quite a shot at the plaintiffs who are fighting for the people and what they think is right. Isn’t that what we teach our youth—we all have the duty and freedom to right a wrong? Abraham Lincoln said, “To sin by silence, when there is duty to protest, makes cowards of men.” Just because a local judge ruled in favor of local government doesn’t change what thousands know is wrong. Hopefully the Standard-Examiner will raise its tolerance level to maintain a professional neutrality, rather than labeling individuals as complainers. My personal thanks to Mr. Grondahl, who has not crucified the plaintiffs’ fight in his great cartoons. The more than 100 citizens who have donated to get this land back to the people deserve respect, not to be laughed at. A big thanks to the Weber Wildlife Federation members for their support and recent generous contribution. Right will prevail in our court system. To appeal this decision is important. A Utah Supreme Court ruling will determine if, 100 years from now, the trailhead gate will be unlocked and the “No Trespassing” sign changed to “Wolf Creek Public Park.” Kent Fuller Eden Utah Thank You, Mr. Monson After reading Mr. Monson’s open letter to Rulon Jones, et al I felt as though he and I had had long talks about this very issue, and shared the same feelings about it. He wondered about the same things that I did and asked the same questions as well. I agree that the list of winners in this situation is short, and that the future use of this land seems to be very bleak. This is a sad state of affairs. It makes me wonder how many other people share our feelings. Thank you, Mr. Monson, for expressing my feelings so well. Leslie Nixon East Huntsville Ogden Valley Football Wraps up a Successful Year This year, Ogden Valley football had a great year with four super teams: the Midget team, composed of 11- to 14-year-olds, sponsored by the Wadman Corporation; the Junior Midget team, 10- to 13-year-olds, sponsored by Serio Brothers Construction; the Pee Wee team, 9- to 12-year-olds, sponsored by Berlex Laboratories; and the Mitey Mite team, 7- to 10-year-olds, sponsored by Daisy Dots and Doodles, and the Heritage Financial Group. All teams had a winning season due to the sacrifice, discipline and commitment of the young men, their families, and the fantastic coaches and staff. A special thanks to all the coaches for giving these young men such a great learning experience. Coaches, your time and the giving of yourselves will live for years with these young men. Thanks to our team sponsors for providing each team member with a new black and red personalized jersey and equipment. This year we had a record number of players, and the equipment is very expensive. Unlike other cities that have a budget given to them to buy their equipment, our Valley teams must rely solely on sponsors to help supply the jerseys and equipment. Our coaches’ shirts were sponsored by Zions Bank, South Fork Chevron, the Valley Market and Jady Painting. Congratulations Mitey Mites! They made it to the Mini Bowl and took Second Place. This has never been done before by an Ogden Valley team. The extra games and practices were exciting and fun. Thanks parents for supporting this team, and all the others. Parents truly provide the atmosphere of the games, and can make them fun, and can keep the players going. Watch for sign-ups next July. For more information, or if you have questions, contact Vern Hart at 745-6869, or any of our fantastic coaches. Vern and Lora Hart Liberty See page 14 for pictures of the football teams. ORDER NOW!
