Show Volume III, Issue VII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 15 February 1, 2001 President David O. McKay and Family, Late 1940s By Stanley F. Wangsgaard, Ogden Valley Historian The years following World War II were wonderful in Huntsville and especially after a new snowstorm when we would see scenes as in this picture with President David O. McKay at the reigns, taking his children and grand-children for a bob-sleigh ride. The cheery sound of the bells strung over the backs of his horses was especially pleasing. President McKay wanted his family to experience what if was like traveling around town when he was a boy, even going to Ogden through the beautiful canyon. I recall as a boy in the 1930’s how quiet it was when going in the bob-sleigh to feed the cattle. All that was heard was the crunching of the snow under the hooves of the horses, coupled with their breathing and the jingle of the bells. The snow seemed to absorb the sound so it didn’t carry very far. Of course, there were more noisy times with a group of us laughing and screaming with glee while sleigh riding—kids on small sleighs being pulled by ropes, some even being pulled on skis. If anyone fell off, they had to run and catch up. Some would hang onto the back, sliding on their shoes, others would hang on the side, riding the runners. When a group of older boys got together it wasn’t calm sleigh riding. They would whirl every corner. As the horses approached each corner full speed, they would be turned quickly, which made the sleighs go sliding sideways, sometimes almost in a complete circle and, of course, those older boys stood up to show they were tough. If they fell or sat down, they were sissies. It was a rip-roaring good time. The “good ol’ days” in the Valley, in the winter, were fun!
