Show Page The Ogden Valley news Volume XIV Issue XVIII December 1, 2007 Announcements Births Katie and Jaren Florence Gould had a baby boy on October 28, 2007. Young Womanhood Award Starr Mamie Lewis, 14 year old daughter of Derwin and Becky Lewis of Liberty, has received her Young Woman Recognition Award, which is given to young women who, through the Young Woman’s program of the Church of Starr Lewis Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, complete goals for personal growth, and church and community service. Her final 10 hour project was serving a “Mini Mission” this last summer at the Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City. She was exposed to many cultures through the people she worked with. Starr is the youngest of 13 children, and truly is the “Starr” in setting the example for others. She is a Mia Maid in the Liberty II Ward, Huntsville Utah Stake. She attends Snowcrest Jr High as a 9th grader. Missionaries Elder “Marcus” Scott Shepherd, son of Randy and Steffnie Shepherd of Eden, will serve in the West Australia Melbourne Mission. He entered the MTC on November 7. Elder Tyson D. Pitts, son of Kent and Debbie Pitts of Liberty, has been called to serve in the Texas Houston Mission. He entered the MTC on November 14, 2007. Obituaries Anniversaries Lindsay David Sylvester Lindsay celebrated his 80th birthday at an open house Saturday, November 24, at an LDS chapel in Syracuse. Born on November 27, 1927 David Lindsay to Alice Vivian Cheney and David Colon Lindsay, he was raised in Eden and graduated from Weber High School. He served in the U.S. Army and served an LDS mission to Southern California. He enrolled at Weber State College, where he met Marcia Saunders of Ogden. They were married November 4, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He received a degree from Brigham Young University in 1956, and accepted a job in Southern California where they resided until 1960. They were involved with a church youth group in California, forming treasured associations they still enjoy today. Upon returning to BYU, he received his teaching degree and taught at Clearfield High School for four years. He then accepted a position with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he worked until his retirement in 2000. They made their home in Layton for 40 years, moving to Syracuse in 2001. He is active in his church, and has held various positions. He has especially enjoyed teaching the youth. He is the father of five children (one is deceased): David J. Lindsay, Janette and Craig Hawkins, Kenneth and Paige Lindsay, and Julee and Waldo Trujillo. He has 14 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Sharon and Dick Slaughter Alvin and June Cobabe Dick and Sharon Slaughter Alvin and June Cobabe Dick and Sharon Slaughter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2007. They celebrated with their family at a dinner party in Ogden. To further commemorate their anniversary, they will travel with their children to Hawaii in the spring. They were married on November 8, 1957, at the Bertha Eccles Hall in Ogden. Their vows were later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have lived in Ogden and Pleasant View, and presently reside in Eden. They attended Ogden City schools and graduated from Ogden High School. For many years, they and their four children enjoyed boating and camping, and now enjoy summers relaxing at Bear Lake. He owned and operated Dick’s Barber Shop in Ogden, retiring in 1998 after 41 years. She retired as secretary and travel coordinator from Kimberly-Clark Diaper Plant in 1999. They enjoy their retirement collecting antiques and traveling. They are parents of three daughters and one son: Pam and Dean Nacario, Ogden; Shelly and Greg Lund, Wasilla, Alaska; Stacie and Jared Cheney, Star, Idaho; and Brad and Michell Slaughter, Eden. They have ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Alvin and June Cobabe of Eden, Utah celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and 90th birthdays with family and friends at an open house held Saturday, November 24, 2007. Alvin F. Cobabe was born in Slaterville, Utah November 7, 1917 to Fredrick J. Cobabe and Hazel Hudman Cobabe. Alvin grew up ranching on the family ranch in Eden. Then, letting the entrepreneur in him out, he moved into earth moving construction, electrical engineering, land development, medicine as a medical doctor, and resort development as the developer of Powder Mountain Ski Resort. June Heslop Cobabe was born in Plain City, Utah on June 12, 1917 to William H. Heslop and Icivinda Heslop. June was raised on the family farm in Plain City, helping her father raise a family of four after her mother’s death when June was 10 years old. Alvin and June met while attending Weber High School. June attended beauty school and worked outside the home for a short time, but her main career was that of a homemaker raising their four daughters while Alvin was busy farming and working construction then going to medical school. Both were very active working at Powder Mountain in its early years.
