LOCATED IN THE VALLEY IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE “Ross” OGDEN — William Rawson “Ross” McEntire, Jr., age 91, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2003. He was born November 15, 1911, in Huntsville, the son of William Rawson, Sr. and Rosene Woodfield McEntire. Ross was married to Dauna Hardy by Apostle David O. McKay on June 6, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She passed away on December 2, 1987. He was reared and educated in Huntsville, and graduated from Weber High School and Weber College. He received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Utah State University in 1938. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he was a High Priest in the Kingston Ward. Ross served as a missionary in the East Central States Mission. One of his most satisfying and rewarding experiences was teaching an LDS Deacon’s Quorum of 17 boys. The Quorum won the first Aaronic Priesthood Award that had been given. He remained with the boys as they were advanced to the Teacher’s and then Priest’s Quorums. Of those 17 boys, 16 served missions for the church and several of those, now grown men, had told Ross that he was the most influential person in their lives at that young, critical age. Ross volunteered to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and served for three years as a Postmaster. In that position, he was stationed at El Centro, California and was later transferred to the Admiralty Islands. He worked as a Federal State Inspector of fruits and vegetables for the Civilian Conservation Corps for three years. Beginning his career in the Post Office as a letter carrier, he retired as a Superintendent of Delivery and Collection of Mail. He served as Vice President of the Ogden Government Employees Credit Union. He was Examiner-in-Charge of the Board of U.S. Civil Service Examiners for many years, receiving commendations from the office of the Director in Denver, Colorado. Ross loved riding in the hills on his saddle horse, and hunting deer. He also loved planting and caring for a beautiful garden, which produced wonderful fruits and vegetables for his family and neighbors for many years. He also enjoyed learning to waltz and earned prizes with his partner. Surviving are one son and two daughters, Larry Ross (Rebekah) McEntire, Bullhead City, Arizona; Connie Hanson, Layton; and Julie Lucas, Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters, Jay and Don, Virginia Stallings, and Helen Slater. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Dauna, and one sister, Laura Hawkes.
