Store Hours: Utah Solar Home Tour Set for October 13 Greg Smith’s property had a view— one “heck” of a view. Southward was Morgan Valley, to the north stretched Ogden Valley, and to the west, the slopes of Snowbasin Resort. Trouble was, such a location came with no power, except that offered by the spectacular view. That didn’t stop the Mountain Green man, a finish carpenter by trade. He’s building a home, normal in every aspect, except that it isn’t connected to the power company. He sits atop the mountain, visible from Trappers Loop, with no power lines in sight. Instead of conventional electrical power, he uses solar panels, a backup generator and, in a few weeks, he will add a wind-powered generator. Now those who wonder at the classic-style home being constructed in this isolated, yet visible, spot will be able to tour Smith’s home, along with several others, during the annual Utah Solar Home Tour. The tour, which is free to the public, will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 13. The statewide tour is divided into four sections: Weber/Cache Counties, Salt Lake County, Central Utah and Southwestern Utah. Each section will feature between four and six homes. Each one will also be open to those interested in quizzing homeowners on how their systems work, and why they chose renewable power. The Utah tour is affiliated with the National Tour of Solar Homes, sponsored by the American Solar Energy Society. Last year, on one day, 38 states hosted their own tours. Utah’s tour has been held annually in October for five years. The Utah homes and cabins on the tour feature a variety of renewable technologies—among them solar power, hydro electricity, passive solar, and radiant-floor heating. Most installations use a combination of technologies. A complete list of homes is now available. Beginning October 1, maps and brochures will be available at most northern Utah hardware stores.
