More than 216,600 pins have been sold in a three-day period, breaking any previous sales for Olympic pins. Orders have come from every state in the nation with the top five sales coming from citizens in Utah, California, Michigan, Georgia and Florida. Pin orders have also been received internationally with the top sales coming from Canada, England and Japan. “The ‘We Stand United’ pin is a sign of solidarity with our country and the world,” said Mitt Romney, presi- dent and CEO of SLOC. “The Olympic Games are needed even more today than the day before. They have never been about sport alone. The Games are also a showcase for the great qualities of the human spirit: courage, sacrifice, perseverance and determination. In light of our nation’s tragedy they are also an affirmation of civilization and humanity. As the Games proceed, they evidence that terror will not bring the nation or the world to its knees. The “We Stand United” pin was designed by The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) to benefit those affected by the tragic events of September 11. Proceeds from sales of the pin will go to benefit The September 11th Fund, which was established by the United Way and the New York Community Trust to help respond to victims, their families and communities affected by September 11. The pin was designed by SLOC with patriotism and freedom in mind. The center of the rectangular pin is a white and silver star inset with the SLOC emblem. The pin’s blue and white striped background is representative of an American flag. The words “We Stand United” and September 11, 2001 are printed along the top of the pin. The $5 pin is currently available through SLOC’s website www.saltlake2002.com. For orders in excess of 50, contact SLOC directly at (801) 212-6PIN (6746). The pins are also available at SLOC’s headquarters at 299 South Main Street in Salt Lake City. Aminco International, SLOC’s pin licensee, donated the first 10,000 pins sold to the public and is donating a part of the production cost for each pin sold after that. Each pin that was sold after the first 10,000, will generate $4.62 for The September 11th Fund. Aminco will forgo revenues from sales of the pin as will SLOC. Fanbuzz.com, SLOC’s online store provider, will donate its efforts to handle and fulfill orders placed on the website, charging customers only for postage.
