Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume IV, Issue XII Page 3 October 1, 2001 Letters to the Editor crowds and drug dealers and users. Is Weber County trying to convert this beautiful, natural area into a drug haven? These so-called festivals are attracting elements of the worst kind. When advertised in the paper, it appeared to be very benign and perhaps wholesome entertainment. That was not the case. The intentions of the proprietors of Red Rock are to have these “festivals” to occur as annual events. As commissioners, you are public servants and elected officials who are to uphold, and be custodians of the law. The citizens who live in the areas surrounding Red Rock Café bought these properties in order to have a quiet and peaceful life in the midst of nature. Granting permits for these types of roughneck festivals, which we have learned by immediate experience, get out of hand and become uncontrollable by the police, expose residents and their children to many drugs and other vices. They also spill over into our surrounding Guest Commentary canyons and recreational areas. We may become victims to looters. We have children living permanently in these canyons. Commissioners, do you want our children to be exposed to this kind of scum? As the Winter Olympics are soon coming, we would advise you to be very suspicious and watchful if Redrock Café and Outfitters plan anymore events that may result in the same kind of activities. What kind of image would we portray to the world? We, as a family and as individuals, petition Weber County and the County Commissioners to NOT grant a permit to Red Rock for festivals, or other events that will result in illegal drug activities, noise violations, and the taxing of our police forces to such an extent that they cannot perform their other important duties. Respectfully, Rose Beier Huntsville Memorial to the Victims Who Died on September 11 By Roger Ebert If there is to be a memorial, let it not be of stone and steel. Fly no flag above it, for it is not the possession of a nation but a sorrow shared with the world. Let it be a green field, with trees and flowers. Let there be paths that wind through the shade. Put out park benches where old people can sun in the summertime, and a pond where children can skate in the winter. Beneath this field will lie entombed forever some of the victims of September 11. It is not where they thought to end their lives. Like the sailors of the battleship Arizona, they rest where they fell. Let this field stretch from one end of the destruction to the other. Let this open space among the towers mark the empti- ness in our hearts. But do not make it a sad place. Give it no name. Let people think of it as the green field. Every living thing that is planted there will show faith in the future. Let students take a corner of the field and plant a crop there. Perhaps corn, our native grain. Let the harvest be shared all over the world, with friends and enemies, because that is the teaching of our religions, and we must show that we practice them. Let the harvest show that life prevails over death, and let the gifts show that we love our neighbors. Do not build again on this place. No building can stand there. No building, no statue, no column, no arch, no symbol, no name, no date, no statement. Just the comfort of the earth we share, to remind us that we share it.
