Those constituents can be m i c r o b e s , o rg a n i c o r i n o rg a n i c chemicals, or radioactive mater i a l s . A l l d r i n k i n g w a t e r, i n c l u d ing bottled w a t e r, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. M C L’s a r e s e t a t v e r y s t r i n g e n t l e v e l s . To u n d e r s t a n d t h e p o s s i b l e h e a l t h e ff e c t s d e s c r i b e d for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the described health e ff e c t . Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer u n d e rg o i n g c h e m o t h e r a p y, p e r s o n s w h o h a v e u n d e rg o n e o rg a n t r a n s p l a n t s , people with HIV/Aids or other immune system disorders, some e l d e r l y, a n d i n f a n t s c a n b e p a r ticularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers.
