Show Volume XV Issue VII The Ogden Valley news Page 19 March 15, 2008 Liberty Man at Helm of 1st Annual Golden Spike Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival With all the snow this winter, neighbors of Gary P. Knapp have come to know him well as one of those guys driving a tractor around pushing snow. With four acres of horse property to manage, Knapp said his neighbors have gotten used to seeing him in a cowboy hat and jeans more than anything. Perhaps that’s his same next-door neighbors who didn’t recognize him when they saw him in a video presentation about Enable Industries. They were at a concert of the Bar J Wranglers sitting in the seats he’d given them. “They said ‘Hey, that guy looks familiar,’” Knapp recalls. The president of Enable Industries, a company that creates and finds jobs for disadvantaged workers, Knapp has found himself often in the entertainment business as he works to raise money to support his clients. “Enable Industries needs to raise money to supplement its operation,” Knapp explains. That’s why this past year when some area businessmen, cowboy poets, Curly Musgrave and and western Belinda Gail musicians decided to host an annual major event, the president of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce approached Knapp and asked him to be at the center of the operation. Last fall, Knapp became a driving force behind the First Annual C o w b o y P o e t r y and Music Gathering that will be held May 8, 9, and 10 at Peery’s E g y p t i a n T h e a t e r , Gary P. Knapp Ogden Eccles Conference Center, and Ogden Amphitheater. This year’s headliner performers will be Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail, Bar J Wranglers, and Baxter Black. Cost for their concerts is $10 for Curly Musgrave and Belinda Gail, and $20 each for Bar J Wranglers and Baxter Black. Knapp said these entertainers appeal specifically to those who lead the kind of rural lifestyle of the residents of Ogden Valley. “I’ve listened to Baxter Black on public radio for years,” he said, as one example. “Once he starts a story, you have to listen to see how he will end it.” But Knapp said the area’s local western musicians and cowboy poets are just as entertaining. Families may attend performances by Utah talent for free all day both May 9 and 10 at the festival. Not only can these entertainers rely on Knapp’s expertise in putting on large concerts, but they also have a cause to support in future years when the event becomes profitable. “We know this will be a building year,” Knapp said. “Any revenues we collect will be held over to support the event in coming years. We think this will turn into a huge event in years to come.” Knapp’s group expects a fair amount of returns in future years. “We have the perfect setting,” he said.
