At a worldwide show held in Nevada, General Schwarzkopf ordered a bronze sculpture of Chief Sitting Bull. After it was completed, Schwarzkopf invited Peterson to his home in Telluride, Colorado, where Peterson delivered the bronze sculpture. In January of 2001, former President George H. Bush invited Peterson to his office in Houston, where Craig delivered an art piece Bush had ordered—a small American Bald Eagle. As they visited, Peterson was invited and commissioned by Bush to create the portrait sculpture of his son George W. for placement in the White House in Washington D.C. moved to Eden, where he is managing The Square Foot Gardening Foundation, a non profit organization committed to teaching, promoting, and demonstrating Square Foot Gardening. The goal of the foundation is to make the world a better and healthier place to live. Bartholomew states that his mission in life is to teach people how to garden. Reciting a familiar saying with a customized twist, he quips, “Feed a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to garden, and you feed him for life.” Bartholomew graduated from Georgia Tech as a Civil Engineer, and launched a career with a company in New Jersey, where he became a full business partner. His innovative ideas on how to improve the business were politely rejected with the explanation that business would continue as usual, “The way I’ve always run the business, and the way my father before me ran the business.” Feeling stifled, he left the company and started his own engineering firm where he incorporated his revolutionary concepts that have, today, become standard operational procedure for most successful engineering firms across the nation. He sold his company and retired at age 35. Finding extra time on his hands, he joined a local gardening club in Long Island, New York where he and his family retired. Turning his critical and analytical eye to the field of gardening, he started questioning experts in the field about “time trusted” gardening methods. Again his questions were met with the explanation, “That’s the way it’s always been done!” Bartholomew quickly came to see that there was a more efficient way to garden. Planting long, single rows of crops didn’t make sense to him. It was wasteful, and arduous. His new square foot gardening method required very little space, 80% less than conventional gardens—in as small an area as 4’x 4’. With the Square Foot Gardening method a successful garden can be created regardless of surrounding soil conditions and with minimal water, no fertilizers or pesticides, no thinning and very few seeds, and with minimal energy for maintenance. It can be started in any season, and a square foot garden has a fivefold increase in production levels over conventional gardens, and can be created and maintained by those with physical and mental disabilities. Urged to write a book about his creative methods, “Square Foot Gardening” quickly Sculpture of President Bush. Creating this portrait of George W. is a great opportunity.” Peterson is in the final stages of creating the sculpture. Photo images of the artwork have been developed, and will be sent to the President for his final approval before the bust is finalized and cast in bronze. His successful book led to a Square Foot Gardening TV series that ran nationally on PBS, and the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel for eight years. Ogden River Watershed Steering Committee Meetings Held in Huntsville The next Ogden Valley Wastewater Subcommittee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 14, 2002 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ogden Valley Library in Huntsville. This subcommittee is part of the Ogden River Watershed Steering Committee, which will hold their next meeting Thursday, November 21, 2002 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ogden Valley Library. The agenda for the general meeting is as follows: Square foot gardening can be done with children in small spaces, such as on patios and decks. Mel’s mission to feed the world has led him to a partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). LDS Missionaries called to third world countries are taught the easy-to-learn Square Foot Gardening techniques so they can share them with others throughout the world. The LDS church has also translated Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening Video into other languages for church use around the world. Women of the church’s Relief Society have been taught the gardening techniques by the thousands, improving their ability to be self-sufficient, and better equipped to feed themselves and their families. In 1999 Bartholomew spent three months writing a fourth grade lesson plan for the Utah State Department of Education, with the non profit foundation providing 500 schools in the state with materials to build square foot gardens, and the knowhow to do so. Altogether, 2000 garden kits have been distributed throughout Utah. The Square Foot Gardening Foundation has also built gardens for Habitat for Humanity, and has also worked with the Boy Scouts of America. Other endeavors include gardening projects for the elderly, gardens for the blind, wheelchair gardening, youth correctional facility projects, and projects in several third wold countries, where Square Foot Gardening has helped many become self-sufficient. Mel Bartholomew has recently contracted with Paul Judd, owner of Great American Realty, to utilize Judd’s fallow corner, located directly west of the Eden General Store, to create an attractive Square Foot Garden center. Bartholomew states, “I want to bring something to Eden that will be a real attraction to the local people, as well as to tourists. It will be a very unique garden. From it we will give tours, and teach thousands about this efficient gardening method.” Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, until recently, hosted a Square Foot Garden Center created by Bartholomew, where over 100,000 people visited the demonstration garden. For more information about Square Foot Gardening, visit the foundation’s web site at www.squarefootgardening.com 1) Consultants will report on progress 2) Funding Subcommittee will report on findings 3) Planning for public information workshops 4) Discussion of Watershed Plan development 5) Other business Summary of October 17 Meeting Consultant Ken Gardner presented drinking water and irrigation system maps. He will also add information about pressure levels. He will meet with irrigation company presidents prior to the public workshops. Bill Luce handed out a preliminary memo summarizing wastewater “Conceptual Alternative Actions” dated October 17. Dr. Mike Minor reported on water quality monitoring at the Pineview Reservoir outlet from July, forward to this summer. He saw significantly better water quality this year, which is likely due to the artificially low water level. This tells us that reservoir management practices have a big effect on water quality. He will be better able to correlate water quality with management practices next year when the reservoir is filled to normal levels. A public workshop is scheduled for January 14, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Snowcrest Junior High School.
