Show wwe DHE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 17 December 1, 2005 SKI LEGENDS cont. from page 16 The Miller Family The final legend honored is not one person but a family—a very special family. This family has had an enormous and enduring impact on skiing at Snowbasin, the Ogden area, all of Utah, the West, and beyond. This is, of course, the Miller Family—certainly the Ogden area’s first family of skiing. There are five of them: Earl and Gladys and their sons Alan, Dale, and Ray. There are individual accomplishments and could honor each of them separately but will honor them as a family because collectively, as well as individually, they have played a huge role in our local ski culture and with all the kids, the juniors, and on up into national and international competition.” No wonder that his own three sons took advantage of his skill as a coach, dominating the junior racing circuits of the 1950’s and early 1960’s Allen Miller was a top competitor in Intermountain Junior Racing from 1947 to 1958. Earl’s most obvious contribution to the sport is the thousands he taught while he was director of the Snowbasin Ski School from 1950 to 1985. Gladys was always close at hand managing the office and administrative matters, which included running the day lodge and food services. Earl took the ski school reins from the legendary Corey Engen, whom he had taught under at Snowbasin. Earl also taught numerous ski instructors based on procedures he helped draft as one of the founders of the Professional Ski Instructors of America. He also was an influence in formalizing the American Teaching Method in 1962. He was the coach of the Weber State Ski es from 1964 to 1975 arl was awarded the Don Reddish award in 1868 Ski School Director of the Year in 1972, the Lowell Thomas Award in 1984, and the Quinney Award in 1998.
