BIkins, of West Virginia, died at midnight tonight At his bedside bed-side were his wife, daughter Kather-ine, Kather-ine, and four sons. David, Richard, Stephen and Blaine, and tho physician. physi-cian. Blood Poison Causes Death. Death was due to septlcmcnia or blood polsoufhg He was conscious until within a half hour of death. In the early evening, there were persistent rumors in Washington, that the senator's condition had become be-come grave and fears were expressed that ho might not live through the night The Elkins family, however, were hopeful to the last nnd to tho numerous inquiries which poured In at the Elkins home, encouraging re sponBes were given. Senator Elkins became ill in tho early summer at his homo at Elkins, West Virginia. He was kept in strict confinement thero and rtnly tho members mem-bers of his immediate family were allowed al-lowed to see him. On November 9, when he was removed to Washington Washing-ton in a private car, he was reported considerably Improved. Physicians declared thnt he might poss'ibly be able to take .his seat in the senate at the opening of congress. Funeral Arrangements tater. .. Senator Elkins ailment had never became definitely known. In tho Bummer, Bum-mer, he was reported to be suffering from an intestinal trouble in many respects similar to acute indigestion. At other tlm&s, physicians are said to havo believed him afflicted with a nervous malady. |
