Show DEFEAT TAX ON BACHELORS. The attempt of the women of Massachusetts to secure a law levy-ing levy-ing a tax on bachelors, has came to naught The women have been permitted to withdraw their bill from the senate. A press dispatch in rof erring to the action says : "The Massachusetts senate received the unanimous report of the committee on taxation, giving Mrs. Charlotte Smith leave to withdraw with-draw her petition for an act to impose on bachelors mpro than 35 years of age an annual tax of $5. "This action has the effect of killing Mrs. Smith's bill, and no more of it will be heard this session. While there was no debate on the report, the members of the committee said privately that they were convinced by the recent hearing on the bill that it is frivolous frivol-ous and unwise, and that serious consideration of it would have the effect of giving countenance to "freak" legislation calculated to invite in-vite ridicule and serving no good purpose " .
