I Robin, the fallen banker, pleaded gull- il ty today to an indictment charging 1 him with the larceny of $27,000 from ll the Washington Savings Dank of which tl he was formerly president. Seven in- il dictments against him still remain. He was remanded to the Tombs until il March 27, when he will bo sentenced. )l The collapse of. Rabin's defense of l Insanity mt forward, by his sister, ll Dr. Louise Jtoblnovltcii, and hl6 coun- H sel, -"William Travers Jerome, was foreshadowed last night, -when It was H reported that Robin said he was "tired H of all this fooling," but it caused a H stir in the court room, none the less. H On the night before tho Northern H Bank or New York, In which Robin al- 9 so was interested, went into the hands fl of the state superintendent of banks, H Robin was committed to a private H sanitarium on affidavits sworn out H by his sister and two physicians. The sanitarium rejected him and he W returned to the jurisdiction of the m court and submitted to arrest. On the day he was arrested, Robin at- tempted suicide on the way to court ll by swallowing poison, but the prompt m-M use of a stomach pump saved him. H On motion of Jerome, physicians 'H were appointed by the state and de- H fense to examine his sanity and they I H reported unanimously that he was in- 1 competent to undertake a defense A , jury sitting under Judge Swan, reject- H ed the findings of the alienists and H Judge Swan complimented the jury H on its "horse sense." H The case came to trial on .Monday H and Jerome's preliminary motions to H dismiss on tho ground that tho de- ' H fendant was, insano wcrv overruled by H Justice Seabury Jerome followed by H a searching examination of each tales- H man and all indications were that the N H case would be fought to the last ditch. H Then Jerome decided to withdraw WM from the defense and Robin, through H other counsel, pleaded guilty. H Withdrawing, Jerome said; H "I maintained the attitude I did, H not through obstinacy, but he- H cause I sincerely believed Robin was H insane.' H "As Jerome sat down, Robin arose. 1 H "Your honor," he began, "I want to H make a statement concerning the ar- H tides in some of the morning papers " H Jerome motioned him to sit down ) H and Justice Seabury interrupted him H before he could sav more. H "It seems strange to me," lnterpos- H ed the court, "that what was a pri- H vate conference Should Jhave "been H enrnriri In flip mnrnlll" DflllflrS. It is H I shamoful and it is unfortunate there H Is no law to enable the court to pro- H tect its own dignity, as there is In tH England and other states. , H "All along Robin has maintained H that he Is sane. Not for one minute : jH did he sny that he was mentally un- H balanced In the least. Robin is not H responsible for what the alienists tes- IH titled to." jl Robin on his plea may be given an H indeterminate sentence of not less s H than five years and not more than ten . H Through Riobln's oreratlons, t'ie H Washington Savings bank, the North- H em Bank of New York, and the Car- I WM negio Trust company and a string of H minor, concerns which he promoted, H went into insolvency.
