Show COMPETITIVE BIDS FOR : LIGHTING THE STREETS Utah Light & Railway Company Bids ?5 Per Light Per Month and Merchants' Light and Power Company's Bid Is $4.75 By Calling for Bids City Will Save Over 225 Per Month. - - - At tho city council meeting last night, for the rirst time in the history his-tory of Ogden, competitive bids for the lighting of the streets worn entered en-tered Into, and it means that .jc cost will be reduced from $6 per arc light to $4,75, a saving to the city of $22G per month. The city uses 180 arc lights. Two companies were in the flold, each furnishing a bond of $8,000 as an evidence of good faith, the bond to be forfeited If tho terms of the hid are not complied with, the Utah Light and Railway company and the Merchants' Mer-chants' Light and Power Company, the former company being actuated by the Harrimon railway interests, the latter being controlled and operated by home people. The bid of tho Utah Light and Railway Rail-way company was ?5 per month for each arc light and that of the Homo concern was $4.75. .'he contract was let to the lowest bidder by a unanimous unani-mous vote oi tho council. Councilman Council-man Barker, seconded by Councilman Dana, offerod an amendment to the effect that the matter be referred to tho Light committee, but the amendment amend-ment was lost, only Councllmen Barker, Bar-ker, Dana and Austin voting for IL The original motion was carried without with-out a dissenting vote. Tho terms of tho bid arc that the contract must be signed within 30 days and that within three months after the approval of tho contract the lights must be furnished. The contract con-tract is for a period of three years. Under the iranchlso of tho successful success-ful company the city will furnish a number of lights free of charge and, withal, It is considered that the city has made a good business deal on tho lighting question.
