" The address of Governor Spry was the first of a series of lectures to be given under auspices of the Knights of Columbus during April. Governor Spry spoke on the attitude of the federal government govern-ment towards government lands in the west and Alaska. "Tho federal government," said Governor Spry, "does not realize the Importance of private ownership in colonization and development work. If the situation in the west was fully understood in Washington a dilferent attitude would no doubt result. Senator Sen-ator Reed Smoot of Utah and the senators sen-ators of Colorado are making a commendable com-mendable fight to have these lands opened for private development. As it is tho man who sinks his money into development work In those radium radi-um bearing lands is not even assured the permanency of his claims, but is merely given the rights of a tenanL Large investors are somewhat backward back-ward in giving their money to development devel-opment work on government lands. The same situation exists in Alaska, which is known to be one of the richest countries in the world." |
