Show oo NEW WITNESS FOUND IN THE BECKER CASE New York, March 31 The new witness whose presence mnkes possible pos-sible the second trial In the case of William Becker told his whole story today. He Is Jacob Goldman, an eas"t side salesman, 24 years old. and known on Second avenue as "Sliver Jake." Goldman says he overheard Becker Beck-er say to Jack Rose In the Lafayette baths: "If you don't croak that d Rosenthal, I'll go out and croak him myself." Goldman's story, therefore is a complete corroboration of the testimony testi-mony of Morris Luban, who was a witness at the first trial, but whose credibility was fiercely attacked by the defense. The court of appeals also characterized Luban's testimony as unworthy of belief. Instead of Luban the prosecution will have Goldman, who defies the defense to discredit him. Goldman also corroborates Rose, whose description de-scription of Becker's rage over Rose's failure to kill Rosenthal was one of the mo6t thrilling cliapters of his testimony. One of the moBt astonishing features fea-tures of Goldman's story is that friends of Becker gave him monev throughout the first trial to keep him in hiding. While detectives of tho district attorney were hunting for him, he kopt out of their reach in a little east side flat. Now and then he would creep out, and at some prearranged signal meet a mysterious go-between of the underworld, un-derworld, who would pay him the hush money. oo- |
