Show RAILROAD NOTES E L McKell lp train master at car alln was in ogden today henry hill S P yardmaster has returned from the hills rush of extra work in the S P shops makes the men work ten hour shifts for a few days J 0 goodsell traveling passenger agent of the union pacific was in ogden today superintendent noble and assistant superintendent fitzgerald ot the S P went west on no 2 today on a tour ot inspection PIONEER ENGINE DRIVER II 11 S bull of salt lake has been visiting his sister mrs frank dudman at north ogden tor the past two weeks and incidentally shaking hands with a number ot old frienda in ogden mr bult Is an old engineer and tells many interesting stories of pioneer railroading and railroaders in utah he opened the throttle of the first en gine on the old utah central that part of the present 0 S L running from ogden to salt lake on the day of october 1869 the engine was called the black hawk being named after the indian chief of thai bairo and mr bult pulled the ties and rails for the construction of the line from here lo 10 salt lake city he took the party of union pacific officials over the road when they went down to attend the formal opening of the utah central when brigham young drove the last elike in the completed road then be used to take turns with geo bywater an pulling passenger trains from ogden to salt lake they would make two round trips per day and one would do the switching in the ogden yard while the other did the running on the road changing about once week it used to be a picnic in the yard said mr butt the fireman would do most all the work while I 1 bad a good time around town but he added reminiscently railroading aint whai it used to be for 21 years mr bult stuck to the cab and then quit the service he had two sons in the philippine service one ernest with the california engineers corps and returned home with the utah boys the other george is still in the philippines mr bult returns to salt lake today |
