Show ENTRANCE TO WORLD WAR Twenty five years ago, on April 6, 1917 congress passed the resolution which declared that a state of war existed with Germany. The American people responded res-ponded with enthusiasm to that call, and they revealed reveal-ed a power that their enemies had not thought they possessed. It was not believed in Germany that the United States could exert a powerful influence in that war. The American people were regarded as too soft and prosperous to make good fighters, and it was thought the war would be over and Germany the victor before our power could be felt. Those Germans leraned differently' when they saw our boys fighting with intense zeal and unlimited courage, cour-age, and when the hardened and experienced soldiers of Germany could not stop them. Considering the lessons les-sons the Germans learned at that time, it is remarkable remark-able that they have gone so far to defy American sentiment sent-iment in the present situation. |
