Show - ejection Of New Chapel To Start The Fourth Ward of Smithfield was created through a division of ,the First Ward on February 13th, 1938. The creation of the new ward left it without church accommodations. Plans were soon underway for the erection of a home for the Fourth Ward and Bishop LeGrande Richards came to Smithfield to investigate proposed pro-posed sites and while on one of 'these visits of investigation, he : observed a need for a home for jthe newly created Smithfield Stake. Sometime previous to this there had developed a policy that the church would discontinue thej erection of separate units for1 I the Stakes and that there would I he no more Smihfield tabernacles, 'as of the past, erected. The ward and the Stake were advised to make a combined unit. Many trips were made to Salt Lake City and surrounding wards where combined stake and ward units were in operation and there was a genuine satisfaction in the relationship in all wards visited. , Lorenzo S. Young who had been selected as architect for the Fourth Ward was retained when it was decided to have a combined combin-ed unit. Through his untiring efforts and experience in the erection of church buildings he has proven a great aid and has taken much interest in developing develop-ing the present plan. The Presidency Presi-dency of the church had author ized an expenditure of $62,300.00 as a structural cost of a building build-ing sufficient to meet the need and when the bids were opened it was very evident that there judgment has been most keen, as the bid for structural cost was awarded to Stetler and Sons Construction Company of Logan at $60,799.00. The external appearance of the building is pleasing to the eye but no money has been wasted in decorative factors. Within there are rooms sufficient to take care of twenty classes at one time; kitchen necessities and everything that adds to he convenience of the public and which will place them in the proper attitude for worship. The entrance Is from t&e east, where a person enters a vesta-bule vesta-bule 20 by 22 feet in dimension. The main chapel is capable of seating 320 people and this can be opened into the recreational hall for stake purposes and will then accommodate nine hundred. Class rooms, bishop and high council room occupy the remainder remain-der of the building with the exception ex-ception at the south end there is a miniature chapel which will accommodate gatherings of moderate mod-erate size and will house the junior Sunday School. The structure is to be of a cream colored brick manufactured manufactur-ed by the Smithfield Brick and Tile Company, and the roof to be of copper covered with tar and gravel and Is considered the best roof available. The interior is finished in white oak. Plans are underway for an early commencement of construction construc-tion and when completed will furnish a necessary addition to the recreational facilities Smithfield, and also furnish the ward and stake with one of the most modern of church accommodations. |
