Show THE RUMOR WE HOPE IS UNTRUE During the few weeks of political campaigning there are always unpleasant situations arising. Even after the candidates agree and announce there will be no personalities person-alities of the opposition, group considered in , their endeavor en-deavor to convince the voter of his or her worth to the community, there is always a remark made that calls for a rebuttal on the part of the opposing candidate which starts a fight of words that bring out statements not altogether true; statements that would have been better unspoken. In the present campaign a rumor is afloat that a certain gentleman .even after his defeat at the primary and run-off elections, is soliciting voters for support at the general election by urging them to write his name in the ballot. The gentleman in question has not notified noti-fied this office of this intention and we sincerely hope the rumor is not true. We believe in majority rule so when a man, unsuccessful at the polls, continue to seek support through methods described above we feel that he is unpatriotic and un-American. That is the spirit that leads to serious uprisings in the form of rebellions, it is the spirit that leads to dictatorship. dictator-ship. It is the spirit that encourages anarchy and through it governments are overthrown, resulting in serious riots, suffering and bloodshed. We are well aware that the ballot is printed with a blank listing of officers to be voted on, providing a place for the write-in names, but we assume the reason of that is to counteract a possibility of dishonest and racketeering racketeer-ing groups. It provides a safeguard to the honest voter. In the case of Cache Valley every candidate had a fair chance to prosilite himself for the office with the result that the people, by majority, made the decision at the primary and run-off election. To encourage the write-in of a defeated candidate is playing an unfair game against the accepted candidates representing , the two major tickets. If there was a possibility of a large write-in vote it would perhaps result in the election of an officer by minority rule rather than majority rule. The vote, you see, would be divided three ways and may prevent any one of the three from getting the majority. Let us maintain the majority rule, the principle of true democracy democ-racy thereby guaranteeing government of equality, and freedom and right. |
