Come and let yourself experience this subtle and gentle way to relax. Work has begun to prepare the long defunct Gorgoza ski area for the coming season. The Gorgoza Ski Area, dormant for more than five years, will spring to life this winter. This announcement was made Monday by Park City realtor Bill Coleman, who revealed that workers have begun preparing the area (located next to 1-80 near Kimball Junction) for a November 20 opening. Coleman's partners in the venture include: in-clude: Harry Reed, also a Park City realtor; Salt Lake City developer Wally Wright; and John Prince, a Salt Lake stock broker. All are involved in the Depot project underway at the north end of Main Street and Wright and Prince, along with Salt Lake broker Jack Sweeney, also are partners in the Alpine Slide. The group has signed an agreement to purchase the 110-acre Gorgoza site from the California-based Gorgoza, Inc., Coleman said, and a maintenance crew has one of the area's existing lifts already operating. A rusting "what's that?" off the interstate inter-state highway for the past several years, Gorgoza has a T-bar, two double chairlif-ts, chairlif-ts, a toboggan run, an ice skating area and a concession building, all suffering from disuse until the revitalization work began last week. "This is intended as a family resort and will be operated as such," Coleman said. "It wilr 'provide" Efrt' inexpensive' alternative for tbr-'beginnjnguskier as well as being a' great place for people who don't ski." In addition to the ski terrain serviced by the three hits and tne ice skating rink, plans call for the toboggan run to be converted con-verted into "something along the lines of the Alpine Slide." Gorgoza also will offer night skiing. "The area was very successful until construction on 1-80 began, forcing traffic traf-fic through Emmigration Canyon," Coleman remarked. It is expected that a ski school with a fulltime staff of 10 instructors will be headed by a local ski professional. Coleman said Gorgoza will be drawing skiers from the Salt Lake area, the surrounding rural communities, travelers on 1-80 and families staying in Park City. Lift tickets will be priced under un-der five dollars, he added. "This will be another amenity for the Park City area," Reed commented. "It looked terrible as a defunct ski area with rusting, decaying facilities. This will be a great improvement and will make for a much healthier-looking local economy." The group also has ambitious plans for making Gorgoza a summer recreation attraction. Coleman said a major skateborad park, and equestrian center, a miniature golf course, a small-scale train, an am-pitheatre am-pitheatre nestled among the pines on top of the ski hill for live dramatic performances, per-formances, an archery range and some lodging units are on the drawing boards. Development of the warm weather amentities is expected to begin next spring, Coleman said. He also noted that the group is seeking tenants to operate the area's snack bar, ski school, ice rink and rental shop. The Grizzly Adams crew has migrated south for the winter. After a summer of filming "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" television series around the Smith Morehouse section of the Unitas. the crew departed Park City Sept. 23 to relocate in Ruidoso, New Mexico, a city which, according to SchickSunn Classic public relations man Al Pederson, "is a ski resort town which could easily be the sister city to Park City except that it lacks the amount of snowfall." A second crew, which spent the summer filming "The Last of the Mohicans" in the Park City area as well as in southern Utah, has relocated in Tucson, Arizona for the winter months. They are currently filming "The Incredible Rocky Mountain Race" which will be part of a series of two-hour theatre features SchickSunn is producing to be presented under the title "Classics Illustrated Presents." (The first of the series is "The Last of the Mohicans.") "Sometime around the first fir-st of the year we will begin several other theatre features." revealed Pederson. Peder-son. "One will be filmed in Georgia and one in an undetermined un-determined location, probably Utah." The Grizzly crew is slated to return in mid-December. New Building The New Sunn Classic office of-fice at 357 Main Street, former for-mer home of the U.S. Ski Team, is scheduled to be completed by the first of next week after an extensive face-lifting.
