So get down on your hands and knees and squint right up close to those tiny leaf bud, said Cindy Bellinger, editor of Xeriscape Gardening News from High Country Gardens in the April 2003 issue. Get your hands dirty, and share the wonder of an earth that knows no war. Take time out from the headlines. Fuss a bit with the thawing soil and find the grace of relaxing right there in your own garden, He said. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, ...nothing can befall me in life no disgrace, no calamity which nature cannot repair. For many of us our gardens are as close to nature as we can get on a daily basis. again, said Bellinger. The garden is beginning to call. And if youve never gardened before, or have a new bed to prepare, spring time is an excellent time to get started. Bellinger said whether planting flowerbeds or putting in a vegetable garden, there are five basic areas to consider: soil preparation, planting, watering, mulch- ing and fertilizing. When considering soil preparation, she said, it is wise to remember that most soil needs a little help. , that picture and check every trash can along the route if necessary to see if someone may of thrown it out after they took the money. My mom said, if its Gods will we would find that wallet how we did turned out to be a miracle. When we realized the wallet was missing we were going through Las Vegas. We called my uncle Mickey Jones from St. George, Utah, and asked for his help. I told him I was going to send my mom home from Las Vegas with my brother and son and I would fly back to Salt Lake, rent a car and drive to every location along the way. He said, lets look at this slowly. He pulled up an aerial map from the computer and we organized on trails new Update Bylaws adopted Secure Existing Trails New Trails Promote Safety Unified Voice Build Organized Rides Public Awareness sandy; those with smaller particles are considered heavy or clay. Loam tends to be the ideal, though not all plants prefer it. When it comes to soil nutrients, its wise to get samples tested to see what minerals and other elements are missing, she said. The main nutrients are: plant growth and the green color; Phosphorus to stimulate root development; and Potassium for helping plants resist disease. In certain parts of the country, soils are commonly deficient in specific minerals such as boron, magnesium or calcium. Once a soil is established its important to keep it healthy by adding organic matter, said Bellinger. This can be in the form of compost, manure, peat moss, or earthworm castings. However organic material is We called Main St. Conoco at 1010 Main St., and it turns out they had the wallet. They said they were waiting for us to come back. We mentioned we saw an A&W sign at one stop but when we called A&W Corporation they said they had no locations south of Provo. The lady at the hospital in Nephi (I did not get her name) was very helpful and said there was an A&W location down the street that was now Conoco and gave the phone number. Send ?? Why Join ?? Environmental Preservation Since a lot of what plants need comes from the soil, it only makes sense to build soil as rich in nutrients as possible with an eye to its structure as well. Preparing soil is actually fun, and the best part is you get to get yqur hands dirty, said Bellinger. Soil structure refers to the particle size in any soil, and gradation runs from gravel to coarse to fine sand, sandy loam to loam, silt loam to silt. Soils with larger particles are referred to as light or Its that time of year Nitrogen for maintaining Dear Editor Agenda Committees Wednesday, April 23, 2003 Hi! Before planting, be sure to score the roots, said Bellinger. This means after taking plants out of their nursery pots, lightly break up the root system. Many plants become root or pot bound and need a bit of loosening. If the roots are tightly bound, the mass can be slit with a knife or prun-ers- . If roots have circled inside a pot and they continue to circle, they may starve or rot. Roots need to spread for optimum growth. As for watering, a general rule of thumb is once soil begins to thaw, it can be waweeks. tered once every As the days begin to warm water more frequently, she said. 2 In the summer some plants may need a deep watering every other day; some vegetables might need a cooling down at the end of every day. The third item to consider is mulching the soil. Mulch is a top dressing for soil that helps conserve soil moisture, minimize weeds, reduce erosion, cool roots during the summer and insulate them during the winter. Mulching is done after plants are set in the ground, Bellinger said. There are two kinds of and inorganic. mulch-es-organi- c Organic includes bark, wood chips, sawdust, straw, leaves and newspaper, she said. Inorganic mulches include stone, gravel and plastic coverings. Or bags of mulch can be bought such as Soil Mender Mulch, which also works as an excellent soil amendment. Generally, about two inches of mulch over the top of the garden soil will do, said Bellinger. Ideally, if soil is adequately prepared, fertilizing isnt necessary when first setting plants. But a stimulator will certainly help reduce transplant shock. Once plants are established and they seem to need something extra, try packaged fertilizer in mix or a garden mix. Both will boost nutrient levels. If you keep these five gardening basics in mind, youll give your garden and new beds a good head start this spring, she said.
